A Fairtrade Town Bovey Tracey

Take a step for Fairtrade

BOVEY Tracey continues to support Fairtrade, despite its Fairtrade Champion Liz Westwood passing away in September 2012 after a long illness. Liz’s passion for Fairtrade resulted in her being instrumental in Bovey Tracey first receiving Fairtrade Town Status in 2008.

In 2010, with the help of the Bovey Tracey Fairtrade Town Steering Group, she won the National Media Campaign Award for promoting Fairtrade Fortnight and in October 2011 she was successful in maintaining Bovey’s Fairtrade Town Accreditation. Despite the sad loss of Liz, the passion to keep Fairtrade a high priority in Bovey Tracey continues. In March we had our fifth successful Fairtrade primary schools’ conference in the town hall during Fairtrade Fortnight. This event has grown over the years and was attended by 80 children representing four local schools. The focus this year was on learning about Fairtrade coffee from Peru through our Fairtrade producer and visitor Oscar Salazar. The popular

Choosing Fairtrade offers

farmers and workers in developing countries a better chance to work their way out of poverty, through fairer wages, safer conditions at work, and a little extra called the Fairtrade premium to invest in projects to improve life for their own communities.

If you already support

Fairtrade then many thanks, if not then your step for Fairtrade can be as simple as buying a Fairtrade product, such as tea or coffee. Fairtrade products are now widely stocked by

many retail outlets, including a number of shops in Bovey Tracey. Every single step counts because together they lead to life-changing projects. Fairtrade fortnight may be over for this year but there are plenty of other ways to continue supporting the millions of farmers and workers in developing countries who still need our continued support. If you would like to know more about Fairtrade, contact Terry Westwood, of Bovey Tracey Fairtrade Steering Group, on 01626 836107.
