Parke Bovey Tracey
IF you find yourself with time to spare in Bovey Tracey, why not visit National Trust, Parke? It is only a short distance from the centre of Bovey Tracey and is a great place for walking and for people of all ages to enjoy. It was left to the National Trust by Major Hole in 1974. The main house isn’t open to the public as it’s the offices of Dartmoor National Park Authority. The historic parkland is grazed by sheep and sometimes Dartmoor ponies. There are large areas of woodland lining the glorious River Bovey. The oak, ash and beech trees are used to provide sustainable wood fuel.
There are lots of features to look out for that tell the history of Parke,
from the medieval weir to the dismantled railway line and the spoil heaps from tin mining. The old railway line has been upgraded into a multi-use route as part of the Wray Valley Trail, and is ideal for walkers
and cyclists.
There is an abundance of wildlife to spot including deer, dippers and kingfishers if you are lucky, whilst at different times of the year there are an abundance of wild flowers. The walled garden is managed jointly by National Trust and Bovey Community Gardeners (
www.boveycommunitygarden.org.uk) producing large quantities of vegetables, fruit and grapes.
The apple orchard is planted with a range of Devon cider and dessert apples, which are used to produce a tasty Parke Apple Juice each autumn.
Home Farm Café is a welcoming place that
serves delicious home made food, coffees, teas cakes and ices. It is open 10am to 5pm (4pm in winter) Tel 01626 830016 (

There are various walking trails of different lengths (leaflet available from National Trust Ranger’s office at Parke). Families can also enjoy a choice of
orienteering routes and several geocaches. The Dartmoor
Pony Visitor and Education Centre is based at Parke. For further details and
opening times visit the DPHT website (
www.dpht.co.uk) telephone 01626 833234 or check the board in the car park.
