OPAP hit by new taxation from Greek government
The Greek government has brought in a new tax law that will crush the revenues of Greek betting monopolist OPAP by more than 60 per cent in the coming year. The move comes at a time when the Government is selling a 33 per cent stake in OPAP and could quell interest from seven potential suitors.
OPAP has already predicted that revenues will fall from €1.3bn in 2012 to €1.2bn in 2013. The new 30 per cent levy on gross earnings was introduced at the start of 2013 as it looks to improve government revenue and meet fiscal targets set in a bailout deal with its international lenders, the European Union and the International Monetary Fund
Takis Zamanis, an analyst at Beta Securities, said: “OPAP’s estimate for 2013 net profit was unexpectedly negative and noticeably lower than the
worst analyst forecast of €135 to €140m”
OPAP monopoly on sports betting is due to expire in 2020 with its hold over lotteries set to run out in 2030 respectively. It also has the exclusive rights to operate VLTs in Greece for ten years and scratch cards for 12 years.
Alpha Finance analyst Angelos Chorafas said: “What might make the difference to consensus, which currently stands at €150m, is a higher than expected cost for the roll- out of the video lotteries and a lower than estimated drop in expenses for sponsorships and advertising.”
OPAP operates an estate of 4,800 betting outlets. It is gearing up to opening more to operate its first 16,500 VLTs, which analysts believe will generate €448m in revenue in 2015, its first year of full operation in the VLT sector.
studio set. Italian presenters provide running commentary on the live games and interact with the viewers and dealers.
Lottomatica customers use their iPads to play Live Roulette, with a simple betting interface synchronised to the online game, appearing on their iPad screens.
Lottomatica originally selected Evolution – the first Live Casino provider to be fully certified by AAMS and to go live in Italy – in 2011. The new iPad services extend Lottomatica’s core online Live Roulette, and in the near future, Live Blackjack offering too.
