Mexico prepares for another gaming growth spurt with 50 new gaming centres planned
Mexican gaming is gearing up to another growth spurt with as much as US$150m to be invested in the gaming industry in 2013. According to Miguel Ángel Ochoa Sánchez, a spokesman for the Mexican Gaming Association (AIEJA) as many as 50 new gaming centres could open before the end of the year.
Gaming in Mexico has proliferated greatly since 2005 when the government granted the Mexican Interior Ministry (SEGOB) the right to grant licences. Although Mexican gaming laws prohibit fully fledged casinos, gaming centres are often large scale offering in many instances sports betting, slot machines and bingo on site. Visitor Numbers are on the up according to Mr. Sánchez who said that they went beyond the two million mark in 2011 and could reach three million by the end of 2013.
Mr. Sánchez said that this new growth in the sector would again be particularly strong along the frontier and in tourist destinations especially beach resorts. In Mexico there are around 350 gaming centres now in operation, which combined, house 90,000 slot machines. Around 330 gaming licences are pending.

new resort casino An Israeli business man wants to build a €500m resort casino on the Greek island of Crete. The plan is to develop a five-star hotel unit comprising luxury tourism accommodation, a conference center, a spa, sports facilities, a shopping mall, a Cretan theme park and a casino.
The Mayor of Hersonissos, Zacharias Doxastakis, said the group has warned the development would only go ahead if the government considerably speeds up the licensing process. The group behind the plan want the Finance Ministry to activate a law dating back to 1994 which provides for the operation of a casino on Crete. Businesses people on the island have pushed for two casinos, one in the east and another in the west.

City officials closed 12 casinos down in February due to irregularities on site and are now looking at ways to change building and zoning laws so that no more casinos will be allowed. While this has led to casino workers demonstrating against the closures, the municipal government looks set to limit the growth of gaming within the city limits and has announced that they will be holding a referendum on the issue in the coming weeks. Locals will also be able to vote on new planning laws which would expressly forbid the construction of any more casinos in the city.
High slot sales sees EGT set up office in Tanzania
