MECA Adds Dueling Demos to Its Competition Arsenal

With an entry fee of $10, this will be a low-cost event, keeping with MECA’s Event Menu pricing. For the first year, there will be one open class, since most of these vehicles and systems are similar in size and close in power. MECA developed the contest in response to the input and

MECA, the Mobile Electronics Competition Association, recently released its updated 2013 rule book and it was at least one page thicker. The group is introducing a new event to join its extensive array of leagues, divisions and contests. The Dueling Demos uses a head-to-head format with two vehicles demonstrating the power, intensity, and clarity of the music they produce. The competitive matrix consists of bracket-type qualifying and finals demos. “These are crowd-drawing and crowd-pleasing exhibitions, said

Steve Stern, commissioner and founder of MECA. “There are many amazing, loud, bone-crunching, hair-tricking systems out there, and their owners are always itching to show them off, and get the crowd pumped up.”

suggestions from committee members, MECA members, pro- fessionals and enthusiasts. The contest is meant to be fun and build the popularity of sound-off sports, with crowd attention and participation being major factors. As a result, the rules for Dueling Demos are only a page long, meant to be simple, easy to understand, and make for a relatively easy contest to conduct. The qualifying and finals round winners will be determined by a people’s choice “vote”, where the crowd stands next to the vehicle they choose as the winner of the demo duel. Test meters may be used to quantify demo statistics and single out specific performance awards. This is a no points event, but MECA mem- bers must compete at four events, including State Finals, to earn State Championship status and an invitation to 2013 World Finals Soundfest. For retailers, and promotional groups, Dueling Demos can be offered as a stand-alone contest, or as part of the MECA Event Menu, depending on the requirements of the Host/Sponsor/ Promoter, and flexibility is built into the rules to allow for event-specific or regional expansion of classes. Even a Sound Quality League type clarity and performance contest is an option. The contest may be sanctioned for a one-time $25 fee, The

Host/Sponsor/Promoter is responsible for handling the judging and all contest preparation and promotion. All contests and re- sults will be posted and promoted at www.mecacaraudio.com. 

For show goers, IASCA, MECA and dB Drag Racing Triple Point competitions will play to spectators. In an effort to reduce the amount of noise on the show floor, SBN management relocated the SPL competitions to the Ocean Center Arena. To highlight companies

like Hybrid Technologies and

Linear Power that are dedicat- ed to Sound Quality, a sound quality auditioning area will be located in the main lobby so revelers can actually hear the subtle nuances these remark- able systems can reproduce. For more information about
