SE Controls’ ventilation technologies improves safety and saves energy at new prison
ventilation solutions from SE Controls to not only improve safety in the event of a fire, but also save energy at ‘BREEAM Excellent’ rated facility. Located on a 50-acre site adjacent to
T
the existing Featherstone Prison near Wolverhampton, HMP Oakwood was designed by architects Pick Everard and is comprised of 17 buildings including a healthcare unit, first night unit and training centre alongside three ‘star’ shaped secure accommodation blocks, each providing 480 places. Designed and developed by WSP
Group with additional specialised input from SE Controls, the combined smoke and natural ventilation system was tai- lored to meet the specific criteria and configurations of the individual build- ings to ensure they not only complied with the relevant natural ventilation
he £150 million Oakwood Prison in Staffordshire is using advanced smoke and natural
standards, but also met strict smoke ventilation performance specifications. The complexity of the smoke and
natural ventilation system varied depend- ing on the size and nature of the seven individual buildings, ranging from a relatively straightforward installation within the healthcare block, to the com- plex multi-zoned solution used in the each of the main accommodation blocks. When smoke ventilation is required,
the system provides both natural and mechanical smoke ventilation to ensure the smoke can be vented quickly and effectively to keep corridors and commu- nal areas clear to aid evacuation. In the event of a fire, natural smoke ventilation is provided by the core’s glazed vents with the addition of ducted dampers, while mechanical smoke extraction is handled by high level louvres together with duty and standby fan sets located at the end of each accommodation wing. SE Controls’ commercial director
Martin Oates explained: “We have undertaken a number of smoke and natural ventilation projects within the prison sector and they each have their own specific demands. The distinctive design of the accommodation blocks at HMP Oakwood not only provide a secure custodial solution, but also enab- led us to create a highly effective natural ventilation systems that improves safety and evacuation in the event of a fire.”
EnviroVent breathes a new Dynamic into the world of ventilation
EnviroVent has launched a new and exciting technology called Dynamic PIV, a whole house ventilation system specifically tested by BRE to comply and work in-conjunction with Jablite’s Dynamic Cavity Insulation to achieve excellent DER points in SAP. Intelligent two in one solution: Dynamic PIV brings Dynamic Insulation and Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) together to offer builders and designers a new two in one solution to meet today’s ever increasing demands for energy efficiency and carbon reductions. How does it work? It works by capturing the heat energy that would normally escape from the dwelling and utilises it to heat up incoming air through the insulation layer, effectively turning the envelope of the building into a heat exchanger. What’s more, the temperature of the incoming air can be raised as much as 8°C. Situated in the loft space, the Dynamic PIV is connected to the cavity and works at a continuous rate to draw the warmed air (via the Dynamic insulation) into the property at ceiling level. Achieving a Specific Fan Power as low as 0.2 W/l/s along with significantly improved U-Values and Psi-Values, Dynamic PIV controls humidity levels and ensures all year round good indoor air quality. This latest innovation offers developers, contractors and specifiers a cost effective alternative to heat recovery ventilation.

www.envirovent.com New Generation air-to-water heat pumps
Space Air, official Daikin distributor for the UK since 1980, is pleased to launch the new generation of Daikin Altherma low temperature (up to 55°C – without back up support), split air-to-water heat pump systems. The newly improved range of domestic heat pumps manufactured by the innovative renewable energy experts Daikin Europe, will provide the highest levels of comfort and energy efficiency, up to 500+ per cent (5.04 COP) efficient, even in severe weather conditions. The new range builds on the already renowned existing technology and includes a new smaller 4kW heat pump unit designed and optimised specifically for low energy homes, which have lower heating requirements than normally insulated homes. The systems up to 16kW are suitable for both new-build and refurbishment. This highly reliable system maintains the perfect indoor temperature and provides the necessary hot water requirements throughout the year, with hardly any need for an additional back-up heater. When used in conjunction with under-floor heating or with Daikin’s own individually controlled, heat pump convector units (or combined), the Daikin Altherma heat pump can be used for both heating and cooling the home too. The new range also boasts a new stylish and intuitive control interface.
