Project: Jubilee Building and Central Concourse

Location:Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton, Somerset

Development cost: £34 million

Client: Taunton & Somerset NHS Foundation Trust

Architect:BDP

Cost consultant: Gardiner & Theobald

Construction design management: Lacie Hickey Caley

Structural engineer: BDP

Main Contractor: BAM

Brickwork contractor: Portcliff Building Services

Concrete contractor: Thames Valley Construction

Groundwork contractor: D20

BAM is also using two different types of frame on the two

buildings to accommodate BDP’s floating roof design. “If we had used a concrete frame it would have been more difficult to do the floating roof,” explains Harris. “From our point of view, that’s been the right choice.” The main ward building comprises around two thirds of the

£23 million construction cost with the concourse building costing the remaining third. With the site cramped and surrounded not just by the exist-

been manufactured off-site in 6-metre long pods by M&E contractor Lorne Stewart. Each of these units weighs in at around 200 kg apiece. After being manufactured, these pods have to be transported from the factory in Worcestershire to the site in Somerset. On November 16, a topping out ceremony was held after

the highest point of the building was completed, but work will not peak on the site until the summer of 2013 when BAM expects to have around 130 construction staff on site. The deadline for completion is November 18, 2013. With

the actual construction simple enough, BAM is confident of meeting the deadline but remains concerned about that vital interface with the hospital as the project runs its course.
