enq.152 Brick innovates new station building

A new station building in London scooped a top award at the 2012 Brick Awards organised by the Brick Development Association. ‘Beautifully pieced together’ were the comments from the judges, as the West Hampstead Thameslink Station won the award for Innovative Use of Brick and Clay Products. The station, officially opened in December 2011 includes a concourse, a small retail concession as well as staff and passenger support accommodation. The use of brickwork stemmed from two primary design decisions: Firstly architects Landholt and Brown wanted to use a material, which could extend from the station approach into the concourse building itself. Secondly, it was considered essential that the facing material of the new wall, which dominates the approach, should create a high degree of visual interest and respond to the avenue of lime trees that overhang the new public space.
