new 87-room hotel was handed over to Travelodge in July, completing Loughborough’s two-phase water- side regeneration scheme.
The scheme, known as The Wharf, had already begun to
revitalise the waterfront area with new student accommoda- tion, restaurants and public open space, as well as improved boating facilities. The development has been delivered by H2O Urban, a national joint venture between British Waterways and private developer bloc. Loughborough Central Travelodge was designed by
architect Hall Needham Associates as a mixed-use contempo- rary building comprising a seven-storey hotel and a 456-sq m ground floor commercial space that could operate as three shops or a single unit. No demolition was involved, as the complex sits on a
formerly derelict site on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, reclaimed when the size of the canal basin was reduced. Even with only seven storeys, the building is one of the
tallest in Loughborough, and upper floor hotel rooms have spectacular views across the town and to Leicester and the East Midlands beyond. It is near the main shopping area and rail- way station, making it an ideal base for leisure and business travellers. H2O Urban’s Richard Thomas says: “The Wharf develop-

It’s creating new jobs and much-needed hotel rooms for the local market, and hopefully will have wider implications for the town by acting as a catalyst for future investment.”
