news Students go ‘Square’ for Kirkby in Ashfield

Two landscape architecture students from the University of Greenwich have won a national competition to design a new square in Kirkby in Ashfield as part of a wider initiative to regenerate the town centre. The scheme will contribute to Ashfield District Council’s corporate priority of improving the prosperity and shaping the future of town centres as well as revitalising markets. It will build on the success of recent and current devel- opments in Kirkby town centre, includ- ing the Morrisons supermarket (which saw the demolition of the former

precinct), and a Wetherspoons pub which will transform the derelict cinema building. Visits to the town centre are increasing and the Council is keen to build on this. Leader of Ashfield District Council

Councillor John Knight said: “We recognise that Kirkby is in need of invest- ment. That’s why we’ve established a ‘Town Team’ to work with local busi- nesses and organisations. “This particular initiative aims to

create a focal public space, make Kirkby more attractive and accessible to visitors

and enhance the economic viability of the town. By working with the architec- ture centre for the East Midlands, OPUN, and design students from across the country, we’ve been able to draw on up and coming talent to develop fresh ideas for improving the town. “Kirkby suffered for years from the

blight of the former precinct area but we are starting to see real changes in the town, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to build a sustainable future for Kirkby.”

with both Southbank Centre and the architects Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, who were appointed to develop design proposals for this part of the 21-acre site. Dan Cossins, project director

(Project Management), Arup said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to work with one of the greatest cultural institutions in the world. We are delighted to be playing a key role in the next chapter in its history.” Chris Carroll, project director

(Building Engineering London), Arup said: “The Southbank Centre is one of the most vibrant parts of the London riverbank, bringing a lively and diverse range of cultural activity to both Londoners and tourists. The refurbish-

ment project is the next step in the transformation of this complex and as structural designers Arup will play a vital role in both the sensitive upgrad- ing of the existing performance spaces, retaining their 1960s character while meeting the exacting requirements of 21st century arts buildings. We are very excited by the opportunity to creatively update our original design”. The 1960s buildings, which are the

subject of this project, are located in the London Borough of Lambeth and lie between the Grade I listed Royal Festival Hall to the west, BFI Southbank and Waterloo Bridge to the east, Belvedere Road to the south and the River Thames to the north.
