trenchers@milesdrainage.co.uk Mowing the stadium pitch in between irrigation!
outside the stadium as he tried to weave past me on his bicycle, for a chat about managing Granada CF’s pitch.
He said: “The way everything is done here on a daily basis is pretty much the same as in the UK. The cutting and product application for example. The difference is the weather. Because it is so hot and dry here in the summer, the way we work is different and our renovations are done differently.”
“Our stadium doesn’t have a problem with sunlight because it is quite low on all sides, but there can be a big difference in temperatures throughout the year and grass growing can be difficult. The roots are never that strong because of the heat and so the pitch is not as stable as I would like,” he added.
He explained how the pitch had been reseeded at the beginning of October. “We have to reseed the pitch every year in the autumn, as it starts to cool down a bit. Usually this will be at the end of September or beginning of October when we have a gap in matches. We seed with ryegrass mixed with fine fescue because of its ability to cope with the hot, dry weather, and we get the seed from England.”
The climate in this southern part of Spain is hot and very dry during July and August, with short, cold winters and mild weather, usually around 15- 20O
C, during spring and autumn.
Javier added: “We continue to overseed the pitch throughout
the year, except during July and August, when the football season has ended. It is low humidity here during the summer but, because of the humidity change in winter, we get mounds popping up in the turf which have to be flattened.”
“We have to irrigate the pitch two or three times a day from spring to autumn and, during the winter, once every three days. If we are lucky, we occasionally have a little rain and we don’t need to put the sprinklers on. This is rare though and, usually, the sprinklers are on. How much rain we get annually depends very much on the specific year, but it can be once or twice in a month, and then usually for a few hours only.
Often, we get rain carrying sand so, obviously, doesn’t have the same effect as normal rain would.” ‘Blood rain’ is common in the south of Spain. It is rainwater carrying grains of sand stirred up from deserts and, when it falls, it looks a reddish colour and often leaves a thin coating of dust after it dries.
Javier was optimistic about the future for Granada CF and believed the new training facilities would have a positive impact on future results. He said: “I am looking forward to the new training pitch being built and what it might do for the club. There is a real feeling of hope here and our ambitions are big. The atmosphere is incredible during games and it’s like a party in the stadium every two weeks.”
