Although struggling to keep its head above water in Spain’s top league, La Liga, Granada CF is a club with hefty ambitions.

Jim Cook reports

GRANADA CF’s current training facilities are receiving a 660,000 Euro overhaul this winter to bring them in line with other clubs in La Liga, and it is hoped this will help its chances of staying up in the league and remaining competitive in future seasons.

Granada returned to La Liga last season after thirty-five years in the lower divisions. They finished in 17th place, but just staying up was a major achievement for the club who, only four seasons ago, were competing three leagues below Spain’s top flight.

The club was hard-hit by the financial crisis and, in 2009, the situation was so dire it looked like it may have to be liquidated. Their turnaround came after signing a partnership deal with the Italian side, Udinese Calcio, which effectively meant the Spanish side would receive a number of players contracted to the Italian team.

This influx of quality players helped them shoot up through the leagues and win three well- earned promotions in three seasons.

The training ground is part of a public sports facility and, therefore, much of the money being used for its refurbishment is public. The barren economic climate felt throughout Spain has led to private investors chipping in for this particular project, and one of the main contributors is Granada CF’s President, Enrique Pina.

Plans are to build a 100m² gym where there are now empty sheds, a new changing room, a physiotherapy area and two

pitches; one 11-a-side and one split into two 7-a-sides. This should be completed by April 2013.

Antonio Garcia Jimenez, coordinator of sports facilities at Granada’s county council, showed me the plans and said making a top-spec facility that was ecologically sound was the main priority. He said it was designed to allow water to run off the ground into a

surrounding drain, so as to re- use it.

“Our main stadium is very poor for water usage, so we wanted to build this training ground to be as modern and efficient as possible. The best clubs in Spain have much more money than we do, but this training base will be as good as many other clubs in the league. It will be much better than some because it will be so modern,” he said.

The irrigation system was to feature thirty-nine pop-up sprinklers in five sectors. Antonio said the 11-a-side pitch would be built to the same specifications as other top clubs facilities in the country and no chemicals would be used in the maintenance of the new grounds.

Granada CF’s stadium, Estadio Nuevo Los Cármenes, was built in 1995 with a capacity of 16,000 seats, which was extended to 22,500 after the promotion into La Liga.

The man in charge of the stadium pitch and those at the training facilities is Javier Taboada. He leads a team of six full-time staff working over both sites during summer.
