Almost a year to the day, staff at Myerscough College were busy preparing for a year-long campaign to increase awareness, opportunities and uptake of Apprenticeships within the land based sector.
Peter Caney (Assistant Principal of Skills & Development) reflects on the success of the
campaign, the importance of delivering a valued learning experience and the Colleges plans for 2013

yerscough College has an established national work based training model focused on delivering training and skills within the workplace
through a network of regionally based workbased assessors, and the advanced development of online learning through the use of electronic portfolios and interactive learning resources.
The College services a broad range of land based sectors, with over 1400 apprentices enrolled on work based learning programmes throughout the country. Approximately 60% of the College’s Apprenticeship provision is within Sportsturf and Amenity Horticulture.
In line with Government skills priorities, Myerscough College is committed to increasing Apprenticeships and engaging with employers to support this process. Peter Caney explains:
“Apprenticeships provide a wonderful opportunity to develop new skills, inspire new ideas and support skills transfer within businesses. This year, the College has been fully committed to creating increased Apprenticeship opportunities, working with individuals and businesses

to support this process through our MyApprentice 2012 campaign.”
The MyApprentice 2012 campaign was launched in January 2012, with an initial target of creating 100 new Apprenticeships in 100 days. By day 70, the College had hit the 100 target and, by day 100, had created 151 new Apprenticeship opportunities.
“We were delighted with the outcome of the campaign. Having a focused target helped motivate staff to achieve set goals and go the extra mile to create some fantastic opportunities for new entrants into the sector.”
The College has managed to keep this momentum going throughout the year, enrolling in excess of 500 apprentices during 2012, with a dedicated employer recruitment service successfully recruiting apprentices to just under 200 vacancies from just over 2,000 applications.
The College introduced a free employer recruitment service towards the end of 2011, and this has gone from strength to strength during the campaign. A dedicated employer services team provides an excellent service in providing information, advice and guidance to
employers, advertising vacancies and supporting employers in recruiting apprentices. The ratio of applications to jobs indicates the interest in people trying to access Apprenticeships which, in turn, breeds competition and better quality candidates for the employer to select from.
Dale Frith, Head Groundsman at Fleetwood Town FC, has benefitted from the College employer recruitment service, helping to recruit Ashley Roache, local lad and lifelong supporter, into an Apprenticeship with the club. Dale said:
“I am really pleased to be offering Ashley this opportunity. I studied at Myerscough College myself and the quality of training is first class. It’s nice to be giving something back, and this is hopefully the start of a great career for Ashley within the industry.”
In addition to focusing on growth in Apprenticeships, the MyApprentice campaign has also had a strong focus on delivering quality training within the workplace.
