Dozens of jobs up for grabs
A RANGE of apprenticeships and graduate trainee opportunities are being offered by Carmarthenshire County Council. Over the next few months, around
20 apprenticeships and 12 graduate opportunities will be on offer working within departments across the council. Opportunities will range from youth work and a trainee park ranger, to trainee accountants and solicitors. The positions are being offered to
provide support to people looking for jobs, particularly young people wanting to start their careers. An investment of £500,000 has been made to create the opportunities to give more people the chance the progress, gain skills and develop careers. Council Leader Cllr Kevin Madge
said: “We are all aware that the current financial climate has made the labour market extremely difficult, particularly for people who are at the beginning of their careers. The result of this has been that many talented, enthusiastic people are struggling to find opportunities to use their skills and fulfil their ambitions.
“We strongly believe that, provided
with the right opportunity, people can develop through these routes to play a key role in the delivery of high quality services and contribute to Carmarthenshire’s future. This is why, even during a period of reducing budgets, the council has chosen to make a significant investment of up to £500,000 in the development of high potential apprentices and graduates.” Each of the opportunities on offer
is linked to a relevant qualification, giving candidates an opportunity to develop key skills which will set them on their chosen career path. More specific information about each of the opportunities and details of how to apply will be available on Carmarthenshire County Council’s website

BEN Jenkins started his career as a Modern Apprentice shadowing the county council photographer. He went on to work on P&O cruises taking pictures in places as glamorous as Casablanca and Rome. Now Ben runs his own photography business and credits the Modern
Apprenticeship for his success. He said: “I found the Modern Apprenticeship Programme to be an excellent foundation and a great introduction into working life, opening many windows of opportunity during this difficult current climate of depression.”
Onwards and upwards CATHERINE Evans secured a
graduate post within Carmarthenshire County Council after leaving Oxford University in 2004. She worked within four different
departments over a two-year period, and had two secondments – one with the Welsh Government, and the other with Hywel Dda Health Board. Catherine is now the Service
Improvement Manager for the council. She said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed working for
such a progressive
organisation which has always been supportive of me. I would recommend Carmarthenshire to any future graduate trainees.”
