Keeping the county going! Eisteddfod joy

THE National Eisteddfod will visit Carmarthenshire in 2014 and preparations are already underway to ensure a successful week. There is just over a year and a half to prepare. The first public meeting has already been held and the work of bringing local committees together is underway. Hywel Wyn Edwards, Eisteddfod Organiser said: "The Eisteddfod has visited Carmarthenshire several times over the years, and we have enjoyed a warm welcome in the county each time. We will return to the Festival Fields, Millennium Coastal Park, Llanelli, home of the Eisteddfod in 2000, which is convenient for visitors from all directions. "Since announcing the intention to return to the area, a large number of people have already contacted us for further information and to offer support. I hope that this interest and support continues for many months, as the work of organising the Eisteddfod progresses." If you would like to be part of the preparations, please email hywel@eisteddfod.org.uk or alwyn@eisteddfod.org.uk or call 0845 4090 400.

Fire safety advice

CARMARTHENSHIRE’S Community Safety Staff are urging people to have a happy and safe Christmas. Fire safety may be the last thing on someone’s mind, but guests, decorations and people smoking and drinking increases the risk of fire. Decorative

INSTEAD of enjoying Christmas Day with their families hundreds of people in Carmarthenshire will be doing their jobs, keeping vital services going and supporting the elderly and vulnerable. Home carers and staff at

residential, nursing and children’s homes will continue to ensure their residents’ needs are met. Street cleaners will be out and about and highways staff will be on standy. Nurses, doctors and hospital staff will continue caring for patients, and

police officers will keep pounding the beat. Thousands of volunteers will continue doing what they do every day – helping others in whatever way they can.

can be

particularly hazardous. They get used far less often than everyday lights, and therefore need more care. The FRS advise checking they comply with manufacturers’ instructions and are bought from a reputable supplier. Checking the

fuses are the right type and replacing any bulbs that blow is also recommended. Candles left unattended can also

pose a significant danger. It is advisable to keep them away from anything that can easily catch fire. They also need to be kept upright, in a holder and placed on a heat resistant surface. Decorations made of light tissue

paper, plastic or cardboard burn easily so avoid attaching to lights, heaters or around the fire place. For more information call 03706060699.
