CARMARTHENSHIRE NEWS • EDITION 10 NOVEMBER - DECEMBER 2012 New cycle route is ‘wheely’ good

HUNDREDS of people are now daily negotiating a much improved traffic free link in Carmarthen that was previously only used by a few. The Morfa Farm link has been

completely made over to provide better walking and cycling links between Carmarthen Town Centre and Johnstown. It was uneven, dark and overgrown

and children were deterred from using the shortcut to town. Now funding accessed by council transport teams from the Welsh Government Regional Transport Plan and Sustainable Travel Centres Funds has changed views. Improvement works have created

more than a mile of a continuous safe, level and lit off-road which significantly cuts journey times on the traffic free link. It removes the need to negotiate the steep Picton Hill stretch of footway which caused problems for some older people and

those who were mobility impaired. Where there were single figures

using the lane daily, now thousands use it weekly including the Towy

Riders. Council transport teams acquired 16 new bikes from sustainable travel centre funding for the Towy Riders in recognition of

their work to develop riding amongst young people.

Bumper Christmas for revamped Ammanford town centre AMMANFORD’S transformed

Quay Street is open for business well ahead of Christmas. The regeneration scheme ensures

that what is Ammanford’s busy shopping street has plenty to offer. Whether it’s the Sunday joint or

shoppers looking for gift and present ideas,

the street provides a

comprehensive mix of national and individual independent shops with plenty of choice for everyday purchases, Christmas and special occasion gifts, something for all the family. The landscaping and tree planting

provides a modern uncluttered street designed to meet the expectations of Ammanford traders and shoppers. The scheme has created a modern and ambient environment with more seating and green landscaping giving the street an attractive and relaxed new identity. Police will use new CCTV cameras

that cover the pedestrianised street to keep the area safe, with the further enforcement of traffic regulations.

A RANGE of events and promotions are planned for Ammanford to show off all that the town has to offer. They will start with the Christmas Party on November 17 which will include

the lights switch-on, a world record attempt for the largest number of elves in one place, and Santa abseiling down a building. On November 24, a marquee will be put up in Quay Street and food

demonstrations will take place during the morning. On November 30 there will be a street market Ammanford town centre, future events and activities will also be promoted

through the successful Discover Carmarthenshire website with the development of new pages and special offers.
