POTENTIALLY life changing research will be taking place at a new centre within Hywel Dda Health Board. The Clinical Research Centre, at
Prince Philip Hospital, Llanelli, has two research laboratories, a patients’ waiting area, a clinical room where patients and research subjects can be seen in private and a clinical trials office. The centre will be the UK lead base
for a global trial on smoking cessation. Other trials include looking at respiratory illness, diabetes and cancer. Director
of Research and
Development, Dr Keir Lewis said: “The centre will be used for a mixture of research, some of which will involve patients. Having the research undertaken in a central area will enable
better communication
between trials, with people able to talk to each other and exchange ideas “The centre is integral to the Health
Board’s commitment to enhancing research and development and
additional research support positions are due to be appointed in early autumn 2012 and will also be based in the Centre. The positive impact that research
can have on patients will hopefully be seen very soon.” The centre will help increase the
number of externally-funded research projects undertaken within the Health Board and will help develop partnerships
with external
stakeholders. The centre was officially opened on
October 18 2012 and complements the health board’s plan to develop a Rural Health Research Centre in Ceredigion, in collaboration with Aberystwyth University.
Get ready for winter with Odeon opens its doors
SINCE its razzmatazz opening Llanelli’s new East Gate Odeon has been a little like the Biblical Jerusalem “no room at the inn.” It has been wall to wall patrons for
all five screens of the first new cinema build in Llanelli for 74 years. There has been great excitement and anticipation and Llanelli weekend and half term Cinema Club for children has been packing them in too. There has been nothing but praise
from young and old with James Bond and Madagascar exploding from the screens to full houses. The Odeon with Costa Coffee, Ben
and Jerry’s and confectionery lounges is setting the pace for other elements of
the £26million East Gate
development opening soon. Travel Lodge open later this month.
Nando’s should be opening pre Christmas with Jenkin’s Bakery. Hungry Horse restaurant and Scarlets open in the New Year.

Keep your homes, schools, leisure and business
premises warm, cosy and incident-free this winter by following these simple tips:
DO
3 Insulate all unprotected pipework, tanks and cisterns and drain wate r from systems in empty homes and buildings to prevent pipes bursting in freezing weather
3 Locate and check stop taps – tell family members where to find them and what to do in an emergency
3 Keep buildings heated during cold spells, even if just on a low setting, to help keep things warm and dry
3 Check central heating systems and bleed radiators if necessary and draught-proof windows and doors to prevent heat loss
3 Clear gutters and drains of leaves and debris
DON’T 6 Block air vents – they help remove moisture in the air preventing black spots caused by condensation
