MID & West Wales Fire & Rescue Service and the Women’s Royal Voluntary Service have teamed up to provide Home Fire Safety Checks
for people in
Carmarthenshire. Amanda Cooke, Locality
Manager for WRVS said: “It’s important that everyone knows how to make their homes as fire safe as possible and this is especially true for the older and vulnerable people that WRVS support within Carmarthenshire. With the support of volunteers, I hope to make as many people as possible aware of the need of what to do to make sure they’re fire safe.” WRVS has a variety of volunteering opportunities and would like to hear from people who could help their local community. THE council is investing £4.3 million on road improvements as well as a further £750,000 on bridge strengthening works.
In total, 82 roads across the county will benefit from resurfacing works this financial year; strengthening / improvements will be carried out on eight bridges and 250 lighting columns will be replaced.
THE council is more than prepared for icy weather. Planning starts before the end of the
summer season and there is 16,500 tonnes of salt – double the amount of three years ago -in storage ready to grit the roads when temperatures plummet. Executive Board Member for Street
Scene Cllr Colin Evans said: “We set aside £1million every year as part of our winter maintenance programme and staff are on standby 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “We do all we can to keep our roads
safe for both pedestrians and motorists in what can sometimes be very difficult conditions.” Gritting programmes, weather warnings, school closures, road hazards, disruptions to opening hours of council buildings or services will be all communicated.
