CARMARTHENSHIRE NEWS • EDITION 10 NOVEMBER - DECEMBER 2012

www.carmarthenshire.gov.uk Festive fun this Christm Remember to recycle this Christmas

THE countdown to Christmas has started, but with all the eating, drinking and parties we tend to produce a lot more rubbish at this time of the year. That’ s why it is important we try to limit the

amount of waste we produce in the first place, and recycle as much as possible. In Wales we are recycling more at home than

ever before, as for three-quarters of us recycling is now a way of life. And the great news is the recycling rate for Carmarthenshire now stands at 50%. Please remember to check when your

refuse/recycling collection is taking place over the festive period as there will be changes to collection days because of the bank holidays. Please use your blue bags to recycle plastic

bottles, tubs and trays, metal cans, and cardboard packaging. Most people in Carmarthenshire will be

enjoying more food over the festive period which inevitably means unavoidable food

waste such as turkey carcasses, yuletide plate scrapings and vegetable peelings. All food waste can be put into your green

food bin. It will be collected by our crews and taken for composting. Executive Board Member for Street Scene

Cllr Colin Evans said: “In the UK, we consume approximately 10 million turkeys over the Christmas period. It makes sense to safely dispose of this type of waste (turkey carcass) and all other food waste responsibly. It really is easy and just means separating your food waste into a caddy to ensure it gets disposed of in an environmentally-friendly way by the council.” Figures show Carmarthenshire is continuing

to reduce the amount of waste it is sending to landfill. During 2011/12 the county sent 16,581

tonnes of biodegradable municipal waste (BMW) to landfill – that’s just 56% of its 29,611 tonnes allowance and a reduction of 4,022 tonnes on the previous year.

The Landfill Allowances Scheme (LAS) limits

the amount of biodegradable waste - such as paper, cardboard and kitchen scraps - that councils are allowed to send to landfill. Exceeding these allowances can lead to severe financial penalties. The council also has recycling /composing targets to meet and is on well on course to meet a 52% figure by the end of 2012/13.
