With the evenings drawing in, the cold weather beginning to bite and the prospect of settling down with a hot drink, Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood, our imagination turns to all things baked. The end of the summer fruit harvest provides an abundance of locally grown fruits for all manner of cakes, puddings, pies and crumbles, and with all these readily available ingredients it is the perfect time to get baking. We are also back in the grip of apple season, and although the weather has reduced crops somewhat they are still in abundance. Join Tom Smart as he delves into the life of an apple grower, learns about the varieties available and dabbles in West Country cider (from page 22). You will also find some great apple bakes from page 14.

Autumn also brings with it the root vegetables that enhance our much needed warming dishes. On page 32 we explore the region’s fields to find out more about this season’s best and lay down some wholesome recipes to make the most of the current crop. Next, why not catch up with Chef Tom Woods, Head Chef at Dart Marina’s award winning River Restaurant as he talks about his inspiration and passion for Devon produce. Finally, the game season has just commenced, so head to page 42 as we find out more about Devon-based Bampton Game, while Chef Nick Coiley gives us some tasty recipes to try too. From roast dinners to one pot meals, bakes to pies, if you’re staying in the warm and dry this autumn make sure you are equipped with plenty of ingredients and a copy of FOODLOVER for inspiration.
