THE ROLE OF THE ARMED FORCES PAY REVIEW BODY

One purpose of this survey was to determine whether or not RAF families understood the role of the AFRPB and to garner opinion on the impact recent government decisions have had on the organisation. During the workshops it was explained how the AFPRB works and how it could influence future decisions on Armed Forces pay and allowances.

Both Serving and non-Serving voters felt it important for the Armed Forces to have an independent pay review body (Figure 3). However, it was also made clear that many felt the decision, by the Government, to introduce a two year pay freeze, followed by further ‘pay restraint’ across the public sector, had led to the role, influence and authority of the AFPRB being diminished (Figure 4).

Figure 3:

“ I feel that the AFPRB are handicapped by Government policy and have little influence when pay is reviewed.”

“AFPRB is essential to the morale of the Service personnel.”

“How can an AFPRB be independent if they can only recommend what the Treasury restricts them to? If the AFPRB believe 5% should be awarded they should state that!”
