LIFE IN THE RAF

When we asked participants to tell us about the benefits of serving in the RAF, 32% of the total claimed ‘job security’ as the main advantage, followed by ‘pension’ (15%) and ‘learning a trade/ profession’ (13%). 16% of voters said there were no advantages on the list that they would select. We therefore looked at the data in more detail to highlight some noteworthy differences between the audiences. Figure 14 illustrates the different responses given by commissioned and non-commissioned voters.

It should be noted that this survey was available in Jun 12 and that the Tranche 2 Redundancy announcements were made during this same period. The announcements may therefore have influenced how participants responded to this question, particularly if they had been personally affected by the redundancy process.

Families were very vocal about the disadvantages of Service life. ‘Impact of operational deployments’ (33%), ‘turbulence caused by frequent moves’ (16%) and ‘inability to choose where they served’(15%) caused most concern. 10% selected ‘condition and/or availability of Service accommodation’. During one workshop, an audience member asked why ‘pay’ had not been included in the list of disadvantages.
