THE NATION’S SUPPORT TO THE RAF

A cross-section of age groups took part in the survey, with 36% aged between 31 and 40, 31% aged 41-55 and 29% aged 21-30. The remainder were either 17-20 or 56-64 years of age. 52% of voters lived in Service Family Accommodation (SFA)/Substitute SFA while 24% lived in Single Living Accommodation (SLA) or substitute SLA. The remaining 24% lived in either their privately owned or rented, homes. Families were also asked to describe where they lived, in relation to the Service person’s unit (Figure 2).

Figure 2:

“I am forced to live separated from my family during the week since there is no SFA available at my new duty unit. My commute between duty unit and home is 4 hours.”

“Being close to work is also important – our spouses are expected (and paid) to be at work when they are needed but a longer commute puts extra strain on family life.”

“We miss out on a large part of ‘military life’ living away from my husband’s place of work.”

“My home is 400 miles away from my unit. Although engaged we are unentitled to Service accommodation to live together so I currently reside in the Mess and my partner lives at home.”
