Modified Timber - the way forward

Timber

Lignia full length components without any joins, a real point of difference for elite products

The timber industry has spent decades improving the performance of timber whilst manufacturers have mastered the art of extracting every bit of value from the smallest piece of hardwood when converting it into product. It is the abundance of softwood and the demand for hardwoods which is driving the wood modification industry, giving perform- ance, weight, density and in some cases colour to otherwise basic plantation timber. Modified or improved timber ultimately adds value to some plantation forestry whilst providing an alternative to timbers that are becoming increasingly more difficult - or illegal - to source.

The story and science behind modified timber can be interesting but the reality is that there is a widening gap between supply and demand of premium hardwoods and so-called exotic timbers, this is the space occupied by modified timber. Of course any new product and programme requires rigorous testing but now there is a wealth of data available to support the claims and the possibilities for the industry are vast.

Modified timber now pushes the boundaries of performance in both the interior and exterior applications bringing together sustainable plantation forestry with unique technology and processes ensure timber products can play a greater role in manufacturing and construction delivering performance, appearance and sound environmental credentials. The other exceptional benefit is that modified timber is available in dimensions otherwise impossible to source in traditional timber; this substantially improves the manufactur- ing and design options.

one of the biggest challenges for modified timber. Lignia™ is a unique modified timber in that it offers weight, performance and colour locked in all the way through the board. Whilst Lignia™ is used extensively for interior applications Lignia™XD is available for exterior applications with technology so robust it carries a 35 year warranty when used outdoors.

Without a doubt modified timber is here to stay. A tipping point has almost been reached; in certain key applications modified timber is actually preferable over traditional hardwoods because of its length, grade and colour. Flexible technologies will help deliver timber specifically ‘tuned’ for applications enabling designers and manufac- turers to work with a resource that meets their needs and those of the customers rather than working around the feedstock at hand.

With more and more manufacturers looking to find a competitive advantage the search is leading to innovative new timbers and timber treatments that meet the demands of discerning customers the world over. The benefits extend beyond sustainability and availability. It is worth mentioning that the emerging markets appear to have an ever- increasing demand for high quality timber products and are more receptive to the opportunities that modified timbers provide, thus demand is growing very fast.

With enormous volumes of plantation feedstock available, the market can be assured that demand will not outstrip supply and with many species suitable for improvement there are almost no supply limitations.

Colour plays a vital role in the perception of modified timber because in order to command a premium price the timber needs to look like a premium hardwood. If there is to be true comparison then colour must be locked in all the way through the board and this has been

And the final reminder is that this all revolves around well managed plantation timber and sustainability.

Nature is rarely improved upon but in this case technologies and processes help maximise the benefits of plantation timber and offers real choice and differentiation for the consumer.
