The artificially aged surface changes to a naturally aged surface over a period of four to eight years. After this period, the behaviour of the roof is exactly the same as the original aluminium
profiles, with no effect on
RigiSystems Ziplok 400 standing seam profile has been used to create a contempo- rary look to Light Hall School’s new sixth form extension at Solihull in the West Midlands.
In all, around 2,500sq m of Ziplok were used in both straight and tapered format, complete with RigiSystems 20/100/1000 steel liner, flashings and fall arrest system.
Finish on all the Ziplok is RigiSystems MicroMatt weathered finish, which replicates the appearance of a roof after it has been installed for a number of years and the natural weathering process has taken place. Newly installed mill finish or stucco embossed aluminium can, in certain circumstances, cause problems with reflected sunlight creating glare. MicroMatt artificially ‘ages’ the profiles before installation, completely overcoming any problems associated with reflection.
performance or recyclability.
Ziplok is increasingly being used on buildings within the education sector, where the system really comes into its own in meeting the requirements of this particular marketplace in terms of aesthetics, cost effectiveness, ease of construction, lifespan and environmental considerations.

Swish Building Products maintains top points under the Code for Sustainable Homes
Swish Building Products has retained the green standard BES6001 across its roofline range, with a ‘very good’ rating, delivering instant point wins to house builders under the Code for Sustainable Homes.
In retaining its ‘very good’ rating across its PVC fascia, soffit, cladding and window board ranges, Swish is able to offer developers access to a product offer that gives them maximum points under the Code (tier level 1).
This to date is a unique achievement for a PVC roofline company and means that Swish’s low maintenance range offers the same points as FSC timber under Mat2 and Mat3 of the Code.
Greg Wilde, Swish Building Products, said, “At face value it may not seem much but BES6001 is a hugely important accreditation - it means developers, social housing providers and merchants can demonstrate responsibility and sustainability in the supply chain.
“On the back of this they are able to secure an instant quick win, gaining additional points under the Code for Sustainable Homes.”
Including an assessment of organisational governance, supply chain management and social and environmental impact, the new standard was written into the Code for Sustainable Homes in late 2010. Swish

carbon savings and assure compliance with the associated building regulations and thermal comfort criteria, while significantly reducing the modelling time typically associated with wind tower natural ventilation schemes.” says Alsem.
He also stresses that, for the first time, designers can now integrate natural ventilation
Leading low energy ventilation and lighting manufacturer Monodraught has partnered with building performance analysis specialist IES to develop a revolutionary approach to modelling natural ventilation systems - Windcatcher Performance Components. This pioneering venture introduces a comprehensive ‘catalogue’ of Monodraught’s systems, available as predefined ‘Performance Components’ for any user of the IES Virtual Environment Suite to access and utilise within their models.
Explaining the benefits to architects and consultants, Monodraught Business Development Director, Robb Alsem, quotes the catalogue’s Windcatcher Performance Components as a unique tool that offers the ability to easily and accurately explore the viability of natural ventilation as an alternative to conventional HVAC strategies.
“Users can now carry out their own assessment of the performance of Monodraught Windcatcher systems within their designs, assess the energy and

strategies using quantified performance data that accurately reflects the true performance of the Windcatcher systems within the Virtual Environment. The performance defining characteristics of the systems have been experimentally validated by Monodraught, thus giving users increased confidence in the natural ventilation and hybrid schemes they are designing.
“By giving designers real assurance in their design strategy from the situation data that IES generates, they then have the confidence to specify Monodraught systems at a much earlier stage, thus streamlining the design process” he adds.

Building Products became one of a handful of building products manufacturers to secure the accreditation last year.
BES6001 ‘pulls’ together a number of other standards to demonstrate a commitment to responsible sourcing of materials. Swish Building Products only secured the new standard after previously securing the quality management standard ISO9001, the environmental management standard ISO14001 and occupational health and safety OHSAS18001

Latest HSE figures show robust fixed ladders should be specified more often, says Bilco UK
Falling from height is still one of the chief causes of accidents at work and demon- strates the importance of specifying robust and safer fixed ladders, says Bilco UK Ltd. Although the accident figures for falls recently released by the HSE for 2010/2011 are down some 8% from last year, there is still room for improvement, the company insists, especially as roofers and construction workers are among the worst affected. “Falls from ladders accounted for 19% of injuries resulting in absence of 3 days or over. We must increase the installation of fixed ladders where possible and not rely on using removable ‘lean to’ ladders which are often seen as less obtrusive, and sadly, the most cost effective solution.” said James Fisher, General Manager of Bilco UK, the supplier of roof hatches, ladders, smoke vents and floor doors.
“We still need to give more thought to how we use ladders,” continued Fisher. “One of the important areas to address is exiting or entering a roof hatch. In many cases operatives are obliged to go down to two points of contact with the ladder, although we know that three points of contact is desirable at all times. In many cases, this potential hazard point at the top of the ladder does not allow three points of contact, the hand holds are simply not there; which is why we provide the LadderUp® Safety Post, which provides easier, safer ladder access through roof hatches, floor doors and manholes. Permanently mounting to the top two rungs of any fixed ladder, the specially designed telescopic post provides a safe and secure hand-hold, making it easier to enter and exit an access hatch. We must develop more safety features such as this if we are to bring these distressing figures down further”.
