Structural Repair

Nufins embraces BS EN 1504

Nufins, a division of Universal Sealants (UK) Ltd, has established a strong reputation throughout the UK for being able to provide a full range of construction chemicals and concrete repair and protection products to the Civil Engineering and Building Trades. With a history spanning almost 50 years, Nufins products have been used on such structures as bridges, water towers, office blocks, hotels, rail projects, dams, car parks and sports stadia.

When the mandatory British Standard BS EN 1504 (Products and Systems for the Protection and repair of Concrete Structures) was introduced in January 2009, it comprised the result of over 15 years of input from some of the Concrete Repair Industry’s most preeminent professionals from all over Europe. The document seeks to set standards for the whole of the repair activity, including manufacturing and installation. For the first time engineers, architects, manufacturers, contractors and other bodies involved in the repair of structures have a framework upon which to ensure correct diagnosis, thorough design and specification of materials and measurement of the quality of the materials and

workmanship as the project progresses.

Nufins embraced the ethos of BS EN 1504 and set about investing heavily on new testing and diagnostic equipment for their labs in Washington. New staff were employed in order to ensure that all materials to which BS EN 1504 applies would be compliant within a defined period. This investment in money and resource has resulted in the whole portfolio of Nufins Concrete Repair and Protective Products being certified BS EN 1504 compliant.

The standard is divided into 10 parts; in general terms part one is an introduction, parts 2 to 8 refer to the manufacturing and specification

processes and parts 9 and 10 refer to the site use of the specified products. Each Nufins product data sheet is endorsed with the CE mark which refers to the part of BS EN 1504 which is relevant to that particular material.

Nufins produce materials for almost every repair and protection scenario. Wessex Water were able to depend on BS EN 1504 Certified materials for the grade 2 listed water tower at Rockwell Green in Somerset (pictured) where Nufins provided concrete repair products and their Elastomeric Anti-Carbonation

coating Proflex A. Nucem HB Mortar was used for the vertical and overhead repairs. This material has been specially formulated to achieve and surpass the performance requirements of EN 1504 Part 3 Class R3. Proflex A in turn was designed to comply with the requirements of part 2, which deals specifically with Surface Protection Systems.

BS EN 1504 is a huge step in the right direction and has been welcomed by

those manufacturers such as Nufins who value quality and reputation in this specialised but previously largely unregulated sector of the construction industry. As specification procedures under BS EN 1504 become more familiar to specifiers the interpretation of the Standard will become clearer. In the meantime, Nufins frequently advise specifiers on the use of BS EN 1504, aiming to help others grasp the standard as they have.
