PFA from Coal‐Fired

Power Staons

With a history of use spanning almost 60 years Pulverised Fuel Ash (also known as PFA or fly ash) and Furnace Bottom Ash (FBA) are by‐products of coal fired power stations. They are widely used in construction to reduce environmental impact ‐ for example as a cement replacement in concrete and also in block making, road construction, grouting, ground stabilisation, piling & foundation work.

DuPont, SNCF and RFF present a durable, reliable and sustainable solution to stability and weed prevention

DuPont non- woven fabrics have long been valued for stability and

sustainability in civil

landscaping and now these properties are increasingly being

optimised in railtrack

engineering. In France, an

innovative solution to both safety and environmental concerns has been applied, thanks to a forward-thinking collaboration between DuPont, Reseau Ferre de France (RFF) and SNCF.

On a stretch of line near Lyon the ballast was seriously degraded and contaminated by soil particles, requiring radical renovation. Track stability was not the only issue, ecological sensitivities also ruled out herbicides for weed control. The search for alternative solutions resulted in the first large scale installation and long term performance trial of DuPont’s non-woven fabric applications of its kind.

DuPont™ Typar® SF geotextile, chosen for its proven high mechanical resistance and excellent filtration and hydraulic performance was laid beneath the new ballast, while DuPont™ Plantex® Gold, a unique non woven structure of thermally bonded polypropylene filaments, was chosen to keep the bordering pathways free of weeds.
