Mapequick 043 was supplied for the construction of the tunnel. The use of Mapequick 043 enabled the concrete to attain early setting and strength properties after only a short curing time, even with the presence of water. Mapei’s Underground Technology Team (UTT) have worked closely with local concrete supplier, Mapei UK, to contribute towards the successful completion of the new Tyne Tunnel. The tolled river crossing situated in North and South Tyneside has undergone a major transformation which included the construction of a second vehicle tunnel under the River Tyne. It was this new construction that featured Mapei’s alkaline free, inorganic salt-based tunnelling accelerator ‘Mapequick 043’.

The first vehicular Tyne Tunnel was originally built in 1967 and has undergone a refurbish- ment to meet growing customer demand. The new tunnel, which has been completed by main design and build contractor Bouygues Travaux Publics, helps to serve the 45,000 customers per day.

Mapequick 043 assisted in the overall completion of the tunnel being ahead of schedule.

Mapequick 043 is suitable for application by both wet-mix and dry mix spraying system and thanks to its acceleration properties and absence of alkali, it is particularly suitable for spraying high quality concrete after a very short (0-60 minutes) or long (>24 hours) curing time.

Tremco illbruck products employed in new Victoria Hospital

The internationally renowned architectural practice BDP has turned to Tremco illbruck for the supply of Compriband high specification construction joints and Tremco damp proof and smoothing products, for use in laying the floors of a new hospital building in Fife.

The construction of the new 500 bed extension to the Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy has been led by Balfour Beatty, with MacGregor Flooring being the specialist sub- contractor installing the majority of the Compriband movement joints. The Hamilton based company also took delivery of very large quantities of Tremco ES100 One Coat Universal fluid applied damp proof membrane and compatible smoothing products.

While the latter were utilised to prepare 40,000m2

of newly power-floated concrete

floors, different types of fireproof and waterproof construction joints can be found employed within the reinforced concrete floor slabs from the basement to the sixth floor; including within the plant rooms on the second and top floor. Compriband Superspan FP90 was selected as it has the capacity to retain any water or chemical spillages that might occur in the event of a fault with mechanical service equipment, while in the basement the Compriband Interspan All-Metal FS75 was preferred to withstand extra heavy loads from hospital ‘tug’ vehicles.

Frontrunner Plus entrance matting, manufactured by Plastic Extruders Ltd, is cleaning the feet of visitors to The Building Centre in London’s Store Street. Opened in 1931, The Building Centre is the country’s best known independent forum for information relating to all aspects of the built environment.

The specification of Frontrunner Plus for this high profile installation is proof of its popularity and recognition as one of the country’s top entrance matting solutions. This PVC matting has many benefits over other types of matting, particularly in installations where there is a revolving door or round shape. It is supplied in 10m rolls and can be cut on site quickly and easily without the need for advance templating.

Frontrunner Plus is manufactured with integral absorbent inserts within a 14mm heel-proof vinyl grid (or 10mm low profile option) and is available in 85 different colour combinations. This entrance flooring system scrapes, cleans and dries shoes while any dirt remaining falls through the grid and is not transferred inside, reducing cleaning and maintenance costs and helping to keep the interiors attractive.

Supplied in 10m rolls and widths of 60, 90 or 120cm, the matting forms part of the extensive Frontrunner Entrance Flooring System which comprises several mats for interior and exterior installations. Options include Frontrunner XT with an aggressive diamond cut surface for increased all weather slip resistance, Frontrunner Brush and Frontrun- ner Brush Wide with nylon brush inserts to combat severe soiling.

City of Coventry Health Centre given the Mapei treatment

A full system of Mapei products have provided a quality platform at the City of Coventry Health Centre in preparation for the 7,700m2

of resilient floor coverings and 1,500m2 of ceramic

tiling. Mapei’s Mapeproof ESM surface applied damp proof membrane, Eco Prim T primer, Latexplan Trade levelling & smoothing compound, Ultrabond Eco 380 vinyl/PVC adhesive, Ultrabond Eco Tack carpet tile tackifier, Keraquick rapid-set tile adhesive and Ultracolor Plus grout were utilised in the £22.5m new build and were ideal for the highly sensitive environment.

The rest of the floors were constructed using Interspan All-Metal FS146, while all joints were laid over Compriband Gapseal FR to guard against the ingress of smoke or flame in a fire situation.

Although 46 metres of the Surespan SP90 sufficed for the plant areas, some 240 linear metres of the Interspan All-Metal FS146 were utilised during the installation of the main floor slabs in the ward and other areas.

BDP Architect Eveline Mertens, comments, “We chose to specify the Tremco illbruck Compriband range of movement joints because colleagues in the practice had used them successfully for other projects in the past and because they offer a good appearance. Tremco illbruck is a well known company with a good reputation.”
