4 News UK Government changes to benefit system will have a big impact on many people

Welfare Reform is coming...

CASE STUDY 1

Mr and Mrs Jones live in a three- bedroom house in the South Side. Their rent is £253.12 every four weeks and they get full Housing Benefit. Mr Jones is 40 and his wife is 38, so they are of working age. The Jones do not have children but have a family friend living with them. Joe is 39, unemployed and receives Job Seekers Allowance.

Under current UK Government proposals, the Jones will face a further 14% deduction because they are deemed to be under- occupying their home by one

bedroom. This works out as a cut of £35.43 every four weeks. Because Joe is living with them, Mr and Mrs Jones’ Housing Benefit will be cut by £11.45 per week (a four-weekly deduction of £45.80) for a non-dependent deduction and this will go up every year along with inflation. Taking both deductions together, the household will face a total drop in Housing Benefit of £81.23 every four weeks. Their total Housing Benefit will then be £171.89. They will have to pay the shortfall and make their rent payment of £81.23 every four weeks.
