Make Your Big Day Extra Special
In 2011, Baxters Loch Ness Marathon & Festival of Running participants raised an amazing: £1,092,076. Many people run to support a charity that has a personal significance, while others get involved in fund raising to keep them motivated during training and on race day itself. Whatever the reason, the fantastic support of our runners helped numerous charities including our five nominated charities and over 30 associated charities.
Over the next few pages our nominated charities will tell you a little about their work and why you should consider running on their behalf. Make sure you make your big race day extra special by contacting one of the listed charities and running on their behalf. They’ll be really pleased to hear from you and will also provide you with great support and advice.
HIGHLAND HOSPICE
SISTERS VALERIE Learmonth, Fiona Wilson, Eileen Calveley and Nicola Morris participated in the Baxters Festival of Running in 2011 in memory of their father Hugh Morris. Hugh had oesophageal cancer and was cared for by the Highland Hospice in 2010. The sisters, who were joined by other family members and collectively known as ‘The Morris Prancers’, split into two groups to take part in the 5K and 10K categories. Fiona said: “We feel really privileged that Dad was looked after by the Highland Hospice. The Hospice gave him back his dignity, which was such a massive part of his overall care, alongside the pain relief.”
“Not only was Dad well looked after, but the Hospice was there for us too, making sure we were always OK. “On Dad’s last day of con- sciousness, he did something special by proposing to Sheila, his companion of 18 years. Once the staff realised what was happening, they did all they could to make the mo- ment special. This wouldn’t have been possible had he been cared for elsewhere.”

Valerie added, “The Hospice is a special place – Dad described it as Heaven. It is because of this that we took part in the Baxters Festival of Running last year and we would urge anyone considering running in support of the Highland Hospice this year to just go for it – especially as it is the Hospice’s 25th Anniversary year. Thinking about the difference the Highland Hospice makes to people’s lives really keeps you going every step of the way.”
