In The Highlands

While you’re here for the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon & Festival of Running, don’t leave without exploring the Highlands and be amazed by the dramatic mountain and coastal scenery, outdoor activities, fantastic festivals and rich heritage ...

GRAB YOUR walking boots and explore the countless trails and walks across the Highlands on foot - a great way to build up your strength for the event or stretch your sore muscles after. Climb some of the iconic Munros or enjoy the coastal air along the long, rugged coastline, and discover sea lochs, islets and glorious stretches of sandy beaches including the Silver Sands of Morar.

Looking towards Loch Affric, Glen Affric

Thrill seekers can go mountain biking on some fast and furious trails or why not try rock climbing around Fort William, the Outdoor Capital of the UK? You can also canoe in the calm waters of Loch Morlich in the Cairngorms or explore the Inner Hebrides in a kayak. It’s easy to see why the Highland landscape has been so inspirational for the big screen and was chosen for Disney•Pixar’s new animated film Brave. Look out for the Glenfinnan Viaduct, as featured in the Harry Potter films, head to the Cairngorms National Park where the new Batman film, The Dark Night Rises, was filmed or check out some of the locations used in Under the Skin, such as the brooding atmosphere of Glencoe.

Balblair Mountain Bike Trails, near Bonar Bridge

Discover the Highland’s heritage by stepping back in time to when the Picts ruled the land with a visit to Suneo’s Stone, a colossal carved standing stone on the Moray Pictish Trail, or discover the ill-fated Jacobite campaign with a visit to the Glenfinnan Monument and the Culloden battlefield near Inverness. The Highlands also has a great number of summer festivals which combine great music with beautiful settings - why not arrive early and catch the Loopallu music festival on September 21 - 22 and revel in the beautiful and remote setting of Ullapool?
