INSPIRING RUNNING Melanie’sMiles Better!

As the youngest female to run 100 marathons, 37 year old Melanie Ross knows a thing or two about those 26.2 miles. We find out why she chose Loch Ness Marathon as her 200th event and why it is so special for her ...

n Melanie Ross in 10 words? Determined, busy, enthusiast, tenacious, happy, proud, helpful, modest, approachable, friendly.

n How long have you been running for? I started running in November 2002, when I managed to get a charity place for London Marathon 2003. After that, I joined my local running club and haven’t looked back. It took me 6 years to run my first 100 marathons and three years since then to get to 200.

n So, 200 marathons, that’s quite an achievement? Yes, I was only ever going to run one, but I discovered that I really enjoyed it and so one became two, became three, became four - you get the picture! I started off doing 4-5 per year and now I run 25-30 a year.

n What made you choose Loch Ness for the milestone? I grew up in Scotland, in Huntly and Rothiemay and wanted my 200th to be in my homeland. I was looking for somewhere special, so I chose Loch Ness.

n What do you get from running? Apart from the obvious benefits, my husband and I have recently started to organise a few marathons ourselves where we donate most of the profits to our favourite charities. This allows me to give something back to the running community.

n What are you expecting from the marathon route? I ran the Loch Ness Marathon in 2007 and it is actually my PB course. I think it is a beautiful course and overall a fantastic event, so I was always going to return. I have been dying to come back and take part again (hopefully to achieve another PB!).

n How does Loch Ness compare to other marathons? Loch Ness is one of my favourites and I tell everyone about how stunning the scenery is along the route. On top of that you have the fantastic support and the rousing pipe- band too.

n Post-race plans? I will meet friends and family and celebrate with plenty of wine and some good Scottish grub.
