bhith a’ ruith EDGAR FERNANDEZ
Marathon runner from Costa Rica. n A little bit about you? I’m 41, married, and have a daughter who is one year’s old. I love nature. I work as a consultant on environmental law in Costa Rica, mostly on the protection of natural spaces.
n What made you consider the Loch Ness Marathon? Two things: nature and a child’s dream. When I saw the pictures on the Loch Ness Marathon website, I was impressed by the scenery and the fact the land is so untouched. When I was younger, I used to love the stories about Nessie, so in a way I’m fulfilling a promise to myself.
n How is your training going? I began with some fitness training in order to avoid injuries and to strengthen my knees.
I wake up around
4:30am four to five days per week to go running, walking or swimming. And I follow a special diet for the marathon with a nutritionist.
MARIET DICKENS 10K runner from Waalwijk, Holland
n A little bit about you? I am a pretty sporty person, married to another sporty person (he will run the marathon in September).
n What made you and your husband consider the Loch Ness Marathon Festival events? Some members of our running club wanted to travel abroad to run a marathon and liked the idea that we could all take part in different events, over the same weekend; the promise of stunning scenery was an added bonus.
n Have you read up on the route? I have had a look and I hope for a good time thanks to the downhill nature of the course.
n Do you plan to spend any time in and around Inverness after the race weekend? Yes, we have taken the whole week off to come and visit your beautiful country!
n Are you travelling to Inverness by yourself? I’m travelling with my wife but meeting friends from France who we haven’t seen in a long time. We will be running the marathon together, although each at their own pace.
n How will running in Scotland differ from Costa Rica? Running in Costa Rica is quite difficult
as the air is heavier because of the moisture. I live in a city where there’s a lot of pollution from cars and buses and very few green or rural areas where you can go, so running in the Highlands will be a quite a different experience.
n What excites you most about taking part in the River Ness 10K? That it will be the first time I have taken part in an event in a country other than Holland and that I have a chance to run rather than simply support my husband and the other marathon runners.
n Loch Ness Marathon in 2013? I am looking forward to seeing how I go with the 10K in September, after that I would like to tackle a half marathon - but never say never!
