The WEG was the first international CCI**** for the pair and they finished an impressive 23rd individually.

Born and

raised in Salmon Arm, British Columbia, Rebecca Howard was introduced to riding through lessons and riding camps at a local stable. Rebecca took advantage of the eventing community on Canada’s west coast and was a working student for Joni Lynn Peters and Canadian Olympian Nick Holmes-Smith. While working for Holmes-Smith, Rebecca spotted her first four-star horse, Big Wave Dave, competing at Rolex Kentucky.

Her current top mount, Riddle Master, was bred by owner Caroline Bazley in Ontario. Rebec- ca is the eldest of three girls, all of whom enjoyed riding in their early years. An accomplished eques- trian athlete, Rebecca achieved her ‘A’ level from the Pony Club and is also a certified Equine Cana- da coach.

In June 2012, Rebecca and Riddle Master were nominated to the Canadian Equestrian Team for Eventing at the London Olympic Games. Jessica Phoenix campaigned sev- eral horses suc- cessfully. As a result of her third place finish at the CCI*** Bromont Three Day Event on Exponential, she was named to the Canadian Event- ing Team for the World Equestri- an Games in Lexington, Ken- tucky.

Horses have always been a part of Jessica’s life; for her first birthday, she received a pony. Although she began her riding career in a western saddle, she gradually moved to eventing. Jessica’s first taste of international success came after she purchased Let’s Boogie from her coach, Ian Roberts of Dreamcrest Farm. Together, they fin- ished third individually in the one-star division of the 1999 North American Young Riders’ Champi- onship.

Jessica represented Canada at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, placing 12th individually with Exploring. In 2008, they enjoyed a third place finish at the CCI*** Jersey Fresh Three Day Event.

With Exponential, Jessica placed an incredi- ble seventh in the 2011 Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event. Her string of success continued in 2011 when she was a member of the Canadian Equestri- an Team at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, MEX. Riding Don Good’s Pavarotti, Jessica won the individual gold medal and team silver for Canada.

In June 2012, Jessica and Exponential were nominated to the Canadian Equestrian Team for Eventing at the London Olympic Games. Jessica holds her Business Administration degree from Durham College. YANN CANDELE Birthplace: Normandy, France Birthdate: March 11, 1971 Hometown: Caledon, Ontario

Born in Normandy, France, Yann Candele’s parents encouraged both he and his older brother to actively pursue sports. Once Can- dele tried riding at the age of 10, horses became his main focus. A promising junior rider, Candele was twice named to the French team for the European Junior Champi- onships, an inter- national event for riders’ aged 14-18. Competing throughout Europe

and sponsored by Samsung (France), Candele got his first taste of the big time.

Upon completion of his final year of school, Candele moved to Japan to work for Katsumi Yoshida, owner of thoroughbred racing’s Shadai Farm. Candele won the 1991-1992 Asian World Cup League, making him the only non-Japanese rider to date to ever accomplish this feat. Unfortu- nately, quarantine requirements for his stallion, Orkey, prevented Candele from competing at the 1992 World Cup Final in Del Mar, California. Candele was forced to return to France to complete his required civilian service where, lucki- ly, his athlete status allowed him to work in the cavalry unit. Having served ten months, Candele returned home to Normandy to work for Jean- Pierre Vilaut who provided Candele with top mounts including Palestro II, a Selle Français stal- lion who had been leased to the fourth-placed Spanish team for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. With Palestro II, Candele won three grand prix events, including CSI-A Cannes, to qualify for the French National Championships where they placed eighth overall.

MICHELE MUELLER Birthplace: Ajax, Ontario Birthdate: November 20, 1963 Hometown: Port Perry, Ontario

Michele Mueller inherited her riding genes from her mother. She was given her first horse for Christmas as a seven-year-old and horses have been a part of her life ever since.

Having previously enjoyed success at the one-star level with Cheevos Regale, Michele began leasing Amistad in 2005 when his owner, Julie Pring of Stonehaven Farms, was heading off to col- lege. One year later, Michele and Amistad won both the CIC* Bromont Three Day Event in June and October’s CCI* Hagyard Midsouth Three Day Event in Kentucky. As a result, Michele was named to the 2007 Canadian Eventing Team Talent Squad.

In 2008, Michele and Amistad finished sec- ond at the CIC***-W Wits End Horse Trials in Ontario. Just three weeks later, they placed 11th at the CCI*** Fair Hill International Three Day Event in Maryland. The pair made their mark in their four-star debut at the 2010 CCI**** Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event. Impressive perfor- mances in all three phases gave them a top 10 fin-

SHANDISS WEWIORA Birthplace: Toronto, Ontario Birthdate: August 30, 1984 Hometown: Oakville, Ontario

Despite her young age, Shandiss Wewiora has already achieved impressive results at a high level of competition. In 2001, she represented British Columbia at the North American Young Riders’ Championship in Wadsworth, Illinois. In 2003, she again attended the North American Young Riders’ Championship, this time in Bromont, Quebec, where she was a member of the bronze medal team and also placed 12th individu- ally on her horse Remington Chase.

Shandiss had great success riding, Fionn McCuhal, who was purchased as a five-year-old from Dr. Alan Young and Nancy Maclachlan, and was a result of their breeding program, in partner- ship with Gayle McPherson. She was named to the 2011 Long List for the first time based on her fourth place finish at the 2010 CCI** Bromont

In 1999, Candele moved to North America and a two-week visit with Canadian Olympic Champion Eric Lamaze soon turned into a full- time job of coaching, riding and training at Lamaze’s Torrey Pines Stables in Schomberg, Ontario. While competing on the Canadian circuit, Candele continued to represent his native France and, in September of 2001, made his first Nations’ Cup appearance at his favourite Canadian show, the CSIO Spruce Meadows “Masters” Tournament. In 2004, he represented France at the World Cup Final riding Mill Creek Sweet Dream. In 2007, Candele opened his own training business, Normandy Hills, in Cheltenham, Ontario, and began riding a string of top horses, including Grand Prix mounts Mustique and Bequia, for owner Susan Grange. Soon after gaining his Cana- dian citizenship, Candele was named to his first of many Canadian Equestrian Team appearances. In his major games debut, Candele rode Pitareusa as a member of Canada’s fifth placed team at the 2010 World Equestrian Games.

In 2010, Candele and Pitareusa captured the Canadian Show Jumping Championship title at Toronto’s Royal Horse Show. It was a feat he would repeat in 2011, winning this time with Game Ready.

When not riding, Candele can be found on the golf course or cheering on the Toronto Maple Leafs. Candele and fellow show jumping athlete, Jennifer Wallace, have three children, Alexandre, born in August of 2003, and Tate, born in October of 2005, and Mathilde, born in 2009.

That win paved the way for Tiffany to accomplish her goal of riding on the Canadian Equestrian Team. Alongside Lamaze, Ian Millar and Jonathan Asselin, Tiffany and Southwind VDL represented Canada in the $350,000 BMO Nations’ Cup at the 2011 Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’ tour- nament in September, helping the team earn a sec- ond place finish.
