We seemed to be gam- bling with the weather on our recent Poker Ride but the third try was lucky and so were some members! Sophie Doig had the winning hand and went home with $150.00, Jacqueline Visconti won the second prize of $125.00 while Kim Maclean and Marilyn McLean shared third prize at $87.50 each. There were 45 riders, eight of whom were new members. Special thanks to our team of volun- teers who help make these events run so efficiently - we’d be lost without you. The Club’s next spon- sored event will be held July 21st at 10:00 a.m. and the ride will go rain or shine...but not if there is lightening. It will begin at Eastfork Farm in Orono (map and details at

We’ll be riding in the West portion of the Ganaraska Forest which is a mix of sandy footing with steep hills and some rough, rocky terrain. Motorized vehicles are permitted in this section of the forest so be forewarned we will encounter ATVs; most drivers know to turn off engines near horses and there’s the advantage of safety in numbers. The trail will be marked and maps are provided. If requested, there will be a guided ride followed by our delicious barbecue lunch.
Campers are welcome to stay overnight and ride the following morning although on Sunday you’ll need a Ganaraska Regional Conser-
vation Authority membership (or a day pass can be pur- chased from our host, Deb- bie.) If you’re interested in staying, there are five box stalls available, a round pen and large fenced and shaded paddock. Last time Brock and I camped in the field. My little two-man tent was dwarfed by his 17.1 hand stature. Having never slept that close to a horse before I was awoken a number of times by thunderous sounds that weren’t entirely due to the weather but we had such fun it was worth the intermit- tent sleep! Those who had trailers complete with all the comforts of home were gener- ous in pouring me some freshly brewed coffee the fol- lowing morning. Contact Debbie.Tinmouth@xplornet.c

Our next sponsored event will be September 8th for our annual Skills Ride. This is a great opportunity to build your horses’ confidence and trail safety. Over the course of about a two hour ride you will
encounter obstacles that test the trusting partnership between you and your steed. The Central Forest is mostly sandy trails with no motorized vehicles. Then be sure to join us Thanksgiving Weekend for the Cool Colours Ride October 7th and our Halloween Ride on October 28th.

The Rock ‘N Horse Fest was a great suc- cess in its inaugural year attracting approxi- mately 250 horses and over 7,000 spectators to Harrow. “We expect this year’s festival to be bigger and better”, says Ted Boomer, festival organizer. “The town has embraced the festi- val wholeheartedly and is enthusiastic to make 2012 even more exciting.
New for 2012 is the Ram Equestrian Southern Ontario Derby-Cross Finals which combine the skill and power of stadium jump- ing with the speed and bravery of the cross country course. After Friday’s welcome bash featuring Jody Raffoul on the Blackburn Soundstage, Saturday will feature the return of the Hunter/Jumper Team Challenge for Breast Cancer as well as the Ram Rodeo North American Showdown.
Sunday, August 19th is officially declared “Harrow Horse Day”. This day will be a total- ly unique to Harrow. The town will open to horses and return to the days of true horse- power. They will celebrate the equine culture with a Cowboy Breakfast, followed by the Har- row Horse Day Parade for Hospice, open to all riders and drivers. Participants of all disci- plines will parade through town and out to Cidermill Farms, in time to take in the final Harrow RAM Rodeo. The festival’s “Little Folk’s Field” will feature activities for children such as pony rides and games. The Harrow Horse Day Parade will raise money for Hos- pice of Windsor and Essex County. A portion of admission sales for the festival will support The Children’s Wish Foundation. For more information and a complete schedule, visit
