Dan Burgess from Island Roasted Coffee & Caffe Isola gives us a historical insight into coffee and how our much loved drink came about


Today coffee is grown all over the world, but whether it is from Asia, Africa, Central or South America, or the islands of the Caribbean or Pacific, its beginnings can be traced back to the ancient coffee forests of Ethiopia.


Legend has it that a young Ethiopian goat herder named Kaldi noticed his sheep were particularly lively one day. On further investigation he noted the sheep eating red berries from nearby trees so he decided to try them for himself. He too noticed their energizing effect.


Convinced this was a gift from God, he took the berries to a nearby monastery, but the monks were skeptical and threw the berries on the fire to be destroyed. Gradually an enticing smell filled the room and some of the monks tried to save the berries by raking them from the fire and placing them in water. They noticed this fragrant brew helped them stay awake longer for prayers, and so deemed it acceptable.


It is believed that coffee cultivation and use in Ethiopia dates back as early as the 9th century, and from there it made its way to Yemen around 600 years ago where it started its spread around the world. As demand grew globally for this new beverage, so did the competition to cultivate it outside Arabia. The Dutch finally succeeded, although earlier attempts in India had failed, and


they established a productive plantation in Java and soon expanded to the islands of Sumatra and Celebes.


Curiously, the Mayor of Amsterdam presented King Louis XIV of France with a young coffee plant as a gift, and from here, seedlings made their way to Martinique, and later the Caribbean and South and Central America. In a hundred years coffee had established itself as a commodity. Coffee first made its way to Europe through Venice which had a vibrant trade with North Africa, Egypt and the East, where coffee was introducedas a luxury beverage to its wealthy. It is believed to have come to England around the 16th century and the first coffee house opened here in 1650.


It is from this great heritage that we have such a diverse array of raw product to work with to produce amazing coffees, be they single origin or blends, for many different tastes and brewing methods. At CaffeIsola we roast a selection of these onsite for retail sale, along with home coffee making equipment and accessories. As well, of course, as serving your favorite coffee, handmade by our trained baristas.
