BeCalmed facelift is a glowing success
“It was an interesting water feature,” smiles Caroline Hurley. She can joke about it now but at the time she was reduced to tears of frustration when the walls of her beautiful Cowes spa were running with the contents of the upstairs flat’s weekly wash. But the destructive torrent prompted the new look she’d been longing to implement.
“I felt it was getting a bit dated. There were ideas I wanted to try, to create a ‘spa journey’. When you come into the place it’s clean, bright and friendly; then as you go through to the treatment rooms you’re in a cosier, tranquil place.”
The relaxation lounge
A softened white enables the dark red colour scheme of the treatment rooms to be picked up in the front of the salon. It provides the perfect backdrop to her brand new Espa stand – which in itself is a feather in her cap, because this brand won’t usually deal with smaller companies and Caroline is the only Island stockists. She has also brought in a new mineral makeup range, Mii, which came to notoriety by being the product of choice for the great and good of the Royal Wedding.

As well as changing the colour scheme to create this sumptuous relaxed atmosphere, she also took the opportunity to expand the salon’s capacity. “I looked at what’s happening in London and realised pedicure lounges are very
popular. So I’ve brought in lovely massage chairs and footstools, and because the room is open plan, the screens can be pulled back if friends want to come for a treatment, a coffee and a chat.”
Listening to her clients was rule number one in the planning of the spa, and so the manicure area is set back from the window, partially screened by open shelving.
Caroline has set out to prove that the Isle of Wight is no second best to London when it comes to spa treatment – and BeCalmed is proof of her success. “We have people booking when they’re coming for the weekend, and London residents with homes here regard BeCalmed as their local salon,” she says. “I had them in mind when I planned the decor. I want it to better than anything they have in London!”
So London comes to Cowes. It’s an ill washing machine that blows nobody any good, as the proverb – almost – goes.
