Total Success Total Look Hair Show 2012
The Isle of Wight College Hair Show proved its growing popularity with a sell-out show at Medina Theatre. Guest judge Becca Charlo recalls an amazing event
Style of Wight was delighted to be asked by The IW College to judge this year’s Hair Show, Total Look, along with Paul McLaren from the Carnival Committee.
There was a real buzz of excitement and anticipation before the show. The theatre was completely sold out, full of family, friends, fellow hairdressers and general supporters. The show opened with a performance from Mas Fusion Community Carnival Group, full of amazing costumes and clearly the inspiration for this years ‘Carnival Theme’.
Then the show itself began, with over forty students showcasing their work. There were just so many to choose from! Themes ranged from ‘Bollywood Kaleidoscope’ to ‘Out-Cage-ious’. Once they’d all been seen the models came back to the stage for the parade, which would be our last chance to see all of the models together.
During the interval it was judging time for our Style of Wight Team.
The ‘Total Look’ was as it suggests: it was judged on creativity, how creative the stylist has been, which skills have been used, and how these had been incorporated within their total look. We also had to take into consideration the following points:
The relationship with the theme. Had the carnival theme come across in the final total look? The quality of the finished result.
The stylist’s artistic impression. The use of colour, the makeup used, right though to the costume and props to show their look.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS
Christian Warren, editor of Style of Wight:
“Extremely high quality of work throughout. Very difficult to select just one winner, but Jodie’s ‘Latino Crush’ look really stood out on the creative side for me.
I have been so impressed by the variety, the range and the originality of work.”
Becca Charlo, fashion editor of Style of Wight:
“An amazing showcase of talent this evening from all of the stylists. The amount of hard work that has gone into creating each look is simply unbelievable:.
It’s fantastic that the IW College put on such an event, it’s just great to see the amount of creative people there are on the Island.”
Choosing a winner has been so difficult; we each have our own style and taste so to come to a decision between we took some time. But we were all agreed Jodie really captured that ‘Carnival Sprit’.
