With the Jubilee just around the corner, a summer full of events on the Island, as well as weddings and parties we’ll doubtless be attending, it’s the perfect time to talk Tea Dresses, says Fashion Editor Becca Charlo
The new vintage trend is taking us all by storm: and the best way to be part of the trend is with a classic tea dress. Our fashion shoot (Page 13) evokes all the nostalgia of another era. But how do you put this look together?
IT’S A SYNCH Synched in at the waist, A-line on the hip then finishing on the knee is the most flattering style of dress. Then compile accessories to pay tribute to the tea party. Wear hats that are accented with bands, scarves or broaches. Dress up your jacket with a distinctive pin shaped like a teacup or other design.
SOCK IT TO ‘EM There are more mini trends that we can all be a part of this season, my personal favourite being the geek chic ankle socks, the more colourful the better! Wear these with your summer dresses and open toe shoes or even better team them with this season’s pointed toe court shoes.
DO YOU CROCHET? And no I’m not suddenly lurching off the subject: I’m right on the radar with this one. It’s back! Crochet is big this season, and if you have a willing grandma who’s happy to teach you how, fantastic. But if not, why not get involved with Yarnstorming Bootcamp! WHAFT IN WHIMSY Wear a vintage dress with pretty patterns or solid colour with rich fabrics and unique designs – go to Oh So Vintage . . . for ideas. Select a dress that will be comfortable yet stylish. Patterns are an important addition to your summer wardrobe. Opt for whimsical designs: pretty bird or deer prints, or fruit, feathers, you name it, we want a top with it on. The most wearable item to sport these prints are blouses and dresses.
We are not forgetting those important florals, they are still going strong and scream femininity. But opt for your British blooms in appliqué and ruffled embellishments. See Chanel for inspiration.
BOLD IN GOLD Accessories are the best way to be on tend, on budget. Gold is the colour for jewellery this season, bangles, necklaces, ear cuffs, studs: you name it and its gold. It’s the easiest style update.

BIG HEAD Turn heads with this seasons head wear: it’s oversized hats all the way! Cue the oversized trilby, the 70’s floppy hat and the off-beat boater.
