Firms sign pledge to promote the industry
Kier chief executive Paul Sheffi eld took to the stage to urge contractors throughout the country to pledge their support for Creating Britain’s Future, a campaign to promote the industry launched this week at the Construction News Awards. Interviewed live on stage by
Rebecca Evans, editor of Construction News, which is supporting Creating Britain’s Future, Mr Sheffi eld took the opportunity to encourage the assembled guests – representing a huge range of contractors and other companies – to sign up to the campaign, which is being led by the UKCG. He said he had come up with
the idea for the campaign to maximise the opportunity to highlight the industry’s vast contribution to the economy and to improving people’s lives on the back of the success of the London Olympics construction projects, iconic buildings such as the Shard and the Crossrail infrastructure scheme. With all eyes on London for the

Olympics, contractors across the capital have put Creating Britain’s Future campaign signs on hoardings at more than 50 sites, including those on the Olympics priority and torch routes, to capture the attention of politicians, investors, residents and visitors alike. The signs link to a dedicated
website containing a short fi lm and a wealth of statistics on the impact the industry has on the economy, job creation and creating growth. It stresses that the vast
majority of investment in construction is retained in the UK, and generates £2.84-worth of economic activity for every £1 invested. Mr Sheffi eld said: “The plain
fact is that the construction industry does not shout loud enough about its importance and achievements. “It would be fantastic if
everyone living and working in the UK understood the need for construction investment and was as passionate as I am about
winning the argument.” The launch of the campaign
in London is only the start of a truly national drive to promote the industry. Contractors were asked to sign
a pledge card provided by the UKCG at the Construction News Awards, committing to display the campaign signs on their site hoardings, provide positive news stories on the construction industry’s capability and how it improves lives, and spread the messages to local authorities and local enterprise partnerships in their area. Mr Sheffi eld said: “Our
campaign is aimed at everyone. It will have most impact if the whole industry gets behind it. “Fifty sites in London have
agreed to take part. We want to include more and we want to extend the campaign throughout the UK.”
