WINNER PILON JUDGES’ COMMENT
“This is a business that is only eight years old but has made training integral to everyone in the company from day one”
Bracknell-based refurbishment and building fi rm Pilon puts a serious emphasis on the skill levels of its employees. In just 12 months, 387 staff
completed 1,335 training courses. When a course is failed, the company provides tutoring until it is passed. Pilon believes that there are
many benefi ts to this focus on training. Of eight senior staff appointments in the past 12 months, only three were external, with the rest coming through the fi rm’s academies. It has identifi ed signifi cant

aims to bring together the essence of leading people, teams and the organisation to achieve the company’s overall vision through clear strategies. Its management academy is
seen as essential to fulfi lment as a manager within the organisation, while its foundation academy is aimed at key workers and non- managers and is a requirement to achieve manager level. The company is certifi ed

FOCUS
DAVID BARNES TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR
Since its inception in 2004, Pilon has grown to a business with a £20 million turnover and a team of more
than 500 people. The firm is built on the skills and dedication of its people and it makes a significant investment in staff development. We have implemented a
capability matrix designed to help our employees reach competency and performance. The matrix scope is to track training and skills levels and to develop training action plans for each individual. Our unique key worker scheme
provides the impetus for individuals to progress. In 2011, Pilon opened its first
innovation, training and vetting centre. We already have a substantial training programme in place for all personnel, and the company wanted to ensure the right standards were reached by all. We created the Pilon academy so
the company can target and attract talent among employees.
