Devon-based Plastic Surgeon pioneered cosmetic repairs more than 20 years ago in the housebuilding sector. But after the recession hit this market in 2008, the company developed a comprehensive cosmetic repair and fi ne fi nishing service for an extensive range of surfaces across the construction industry. The move has paid dividends.
Plastic Surgeon reported like-for- like sales up more than 13 per cent in the fi rst seven months of 2011, while its number of fi nishers grew by 19 in the same year. Technology contributed to the
company’s growth. Its Visibility customer reporting system shows the savings achieved by customers by repairing rather than replacing items commonly damaged. The company operates a call

centre to log and allocate work requests. Six regional operations teams throughout the UK employ fi nishers to carry out repairs. In 2011 the company developed
a head offi ce booking system where all customers’ work repair requests are logged centrally. Using bespoke software
designed by the company’s in-house team, the booking
system automatically allocates work to the nearest available fi nisher, determining distance from the site, hours available for work and skillset. Full job details are then relayed to the fi nisher electronically. Before and after photos of
repair work can be recorded on the mobile fi nisher set, and the customer supplies an electronic signature when satisfi ed. All work details are relayed back to head offi ce to form the basis of a comprehensive invoice. Plastic Surgeon records details
of every repair, for every customer. In 2011 the company repaired 83,529 items, carried out 279,274 individual repairs and saved 2,253 tonnes from going to landfi ll. Finishers undergo two weeks of
residential training at the fi rm’s headquarters, followed by six months of on-the-job training. The workforce all hold CSCS
cards and Plastic Surgeon has accreditation from bodies including NHBC Safemark, SAFEcontractor, Constructionline and the Cast Stone Association.

Plastic Surgeon has developed a comprehensive cosmetic repair service for an extensive range
of surfaces, interior and exterior, including plastic, glass, wood, ceramic, metal, brick and stone. Developed in-house, our new
central office booking system has delivered a 4.6 per cent increase in productivity. Four in five bookings are now dealt with in one call and travel time has been reduced by 8.5 per cent per technician. Our Visibility customer reporting
system demonstrates the savings achieved by repairing rather than replacing, helping to eliminate waste by showing customers which items are most commonly damaged and at which sites. Recent projects have included the
Cynon Valley Hospital for Vinci and Mann Island for Bam. We are continually investing in
training our finishers, as well as in research and development, and health and safety.
