Construction News Awards 2012 Roll of Honour 2012: STEPHEN PYCROFT, CHAIRMAN AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE, MACE
This year’s addition to the Construction News Awards Roll of Honour is the leader of a company that, after just 22 years, has grown into one of the biggest, highest- profi le construction companies in the UK: Mace. Mace has become a byword
for iconic construction projects. And Stephen Pycroft, who joined the company in 1993 and subsequently led its management

buy-out in 2001, is the man behind its stellar performance. This year it is only fi tting that
Mr Pycroft joins the Construction News Awards Roll of Honour. Due to stand down as chief executive next year, he has ensured that his fi nal year in the role has been truly impressive. Not only is Mace expected to
break £1 billion turnover by the end of 2012, but its reputation has
reached new heights – and not just because it has built the Shard, the highest skyscraper in Europe. Very few people haven’t seen
the time-lapse footage of the breathtaking construction of the Shard, with Mace’s name right at the centre of it. But the Shard is just the latest in a long list of impressive projects. Under Mr Pycroft’s leadership,
Mace has propelled itself into the elite tier of fi ve or six UK commercial contractors so that few tenders for prestige jobs in London fail to feature them. However, Mace continues to
work across all sectors, from schools and hospitals to the British Museum, Birmingham New Street Station, City Hall and the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. And, as one third of the CLM
consortium, the delivery partner to the Olympic Delivery Authority which has been responsible for creating the infrastructure and venues for the London Olympics, Mace has played a vital role in the programme and project management of one of the most impressive construction projects the UK has ever seen. Mr Pycroft’s personal
contribution should not be underestimated. From his role as chief operating offi cer after the management buy-out in 2001, he went on to become chief executive in 2004 and chairman in 2008. Throughout this time, he has
continued to personally lead projects where Mace has the greatest opportunity to benefi t clients in new markets or when facing new challenges. His vision centres on a
collaborative approach to construction that is core to the company’s success, resulting in an organisation that can proudly say it employs 3,000 people and works on projects across 65 countries.
