Construction News Awards 2012 Rising star WINNER JAMES BULLEID, COSTAIN


James graduated in 2008 from the University of Exeter with a masters in engineering and management – as well as the IMechE best student award, the Dean El Mariesh prize and the Advanced Technologies Research Institute prize. He joined Costain as a site


engineer on a £90 million bypass project, where he was responsible for the construction of 2 km of two-lane carriageway. James used 3D modelling to


successfully engineer and manage all aspects of construction, including site clearance, drainage earthworks, kerbs, street lighting, surfacing and a tyre wall. He also used his electrical and


system engineering skills to develop an RFID innovation that has been introduced to other Costain projects, increasing safety performance and reducing costs to the customer. James won the Civil


Engineering Contractors Association (Wales) trainee engineer of the year award in 2011, and qualifi ed in the same year for the Costain Talent Management programme. He became Costain Trainee of

the Year in February 2012 based on his outstanding achievements on the programme and in the business, as well as his balanced approach to additional work and challenges that came outside normal hours. James was the ICE president’s

apprentice, supporting Peter Hansford for the 12 months to November 2011. He was a valued member of the


successful Costain A465 team, which secured one of the most technically challenging highway schemes in Wales over the past 20 years. Using experience gained from


the Church Village bypass, James contributed signifi cantly to how Costain will deliver the project for


the Welsh government. James completed a six-month


secondment during early 2012 with Costain Property. While there, he tendered and negotiated a catering contract, reducing the overhead by 16 per cent across the Costain Group property portfolio. Over the past four months,


James has been the integration manager for a Costain business acquisition. He has been highly


commended by senior managers and directors of the acquired businesses, who have been impressed with his ability to integrate at pace while maintaining morale.

James joined Costain as a site engineer, and has excelled in a variety of roles from traditional site-based civil


engineering through to winning work, business integration and property management. Through his dedication and


commitment, James won the Costain Trainee of the Year award in February 2012. James has been successful in his


endeavours outside work. He was a windsurfing national champion, a British University Sports Association (BUSA) gold medallist and placed 16th in the Youth World Championships. He was a member of the Costain


Three Peaks challenge team that raised £16,000 for the COINS charity. James is committed to the


construction industry and is enthusiastic about the critical part it plays in everyday life.
