WINNER SKANSKA JUDGES’ COMMENT
“Skanska has sought to improve an all-round good approach, demonstrating leadership within the company and the industry”
Skanska UK spends more than £1 billion with over 6,500 suppliers every year. Over the past two years, the
fi rm has fundamentally reviewed the way it buys products and services to ensure it is building in a truly sustainable way. Skanska provided specifi c

suppliers who have signed up to its sustainable procurement principles. Forums and supplier relationship meetings have been extensively used to engage the supply chain. Skanska says that in June 2011
it became the fi rst construction company to have company-wide procurement processes and
procedures professionally accredited by the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply and recognised as compliant to BS8903. The company carries out a
two-day intensive audit of key suppliers to establish levels of compliance with its sustainable procurement policies and it has seen a 35 per cent reduction in non-compliance over a year. This sustainable procurement
approach is delivering signifi cant business, environmental, community and people benefi ts. Its approach to sustainable
procurement has been a key element in every successful tender submission over the past two years. Bids now include an alternative
green solution as well as providing specifi c client requirements. Members of the Skanska
procurement team have become leaders in sustainability. For example, they helped develop the new British Standard and have advised the GLA group on sustainable development.
