Project £10m to £50m

WINNER MORGAN SINDALL FOR PADDINGTON STATION SPAN 4 RENEWALS JUDGES’ COMMENT

“This was a once in a lifetime project the whole team should feel proud of, a fantastic scheme that has overcome huge challenges”

Morgan Sindall won the contract to restore the fourth span of Paddington Station’s roof, extending its life by 75 years, while maintaining a live environment at one of London’s busiest stations. This span, added in 1916 to

Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s original three-span design, fell into disrepair in the 1990s. Morgan Sindall’s £42.25 million

restoration project meant work on a Grade I-listed building serving up to 180,000 passengers a day. Six platforms had to be kept operational and watertight. Network Rail also required the

contractor to liaise with stakeholders including First Great Western, Westminster City Council and English Heritage. Site workers erected a

temporary works structure consisting of a 5,800 sq m protection deck and 6,000 sq m hanging access scaff old during pre-planned possessions to carry out the construction work safely in non-possession periods. Chutes dispensed materials,

minimising manual handling. An extra level of complexity was added with a 3,000 per cent

change in steel repairs that aff ected all elements of the project, the requirement for which only became apparent after removal of the old roof. Providing more than one plan

for each work area, and reviewing them to achieve the best possible solution, the contractor worked with Network Rail to stay within the original site constraints. A safe plan was proposed to

Network Rail to allow two tower cranes and a mobile crane to be used above a live railway line. Daily co-ordination meetings

allowed the team to look at a plan of the site where diff erent trades were working. The client attended weekly co-ordination meetings. Detailed cost reporting on all

variations was submitted regularly to the client. The fi nal account was settled

before the revised contract completion date, while all major subcontractor fi nal accounts were agreed within three months of the completion date. There were no disputes, strikes or claims on the project.

FOCUS

RICHARD POLLARD PROJECT DIRECTOR

Working on the refurbishment of Span 4 of Paddington Station, there was a responsibility to ensure

the quality of the works did justice to the original structure. This was achieved by drawing

together experience from Morgan Sindall infrastructure and construction projects, using experienced subcontractors and close co-operation with Network Rail and English Heritage. To maintain the programme after

the full extent of the repair work was identified required full co-operation by all trades. Working with Network Rail,

which progressively carried out inspections of the works, minimised final snagging. Upon removing the protection

deck to reveal the final light and airy structure, and to receive compliments from both Network Rail staff and members of the public, it was clear that we had achieved the objective.
