WINNER FRANKLIN + ANDREWS JUDGES’ COMMENT
“Outstanding presentation supported by evidence and facts. Scored exceptionally highly in every category”
Franklin + Andrews aligned itself closely with its customers in 2011, strengthening its local and regional management and extending its global reach and skills base. It developed a lean consultancy
service that helped large clients make savings on their construction schemes. A review of six Highways
Agency projects identifi ed more than £14 million of effi ciency gains. A contract incentive scheme adopted by the Ministry of Defence to calculate payments identifi ed more than £6.5m in savings. As well as effi ciency,

sustainability was a key focus for the company, which has developed tools allowing clients to accurately measure, understand and cost the carbon implications of design decisions. For example, INDUS integrates
sustainability into the design process alongside traditional decision-making criteria and CapIT is an online cost and carbon estimating solution. LifeCYCLE is a whole-life cost
and carbon modelling tool that quantifi es initial construction
costs and embodied carbon by looking at all elements of a project. As part of the company’s
commitment to reducing its own per capita carbon footprint by a minimum of 5 per cent a year, it has produced a carbon action plan. This has encouraged staff to make conference calls to avoid travelling, avoid fl ying whenever possible, use less water, recycle waste and use recycled paper. Although the company
seeks performance feedback on every project against 13 key performance indicators and its 2011 score of 84 per cent showed an improvement against its 2010 score, perhaps its 80 per cent level of repeat business best demonstrates its strong degree of customer satisfaction. The group was ranked 13th in
the Sunday Times Best Big Companies to Work For in 2011. All staff are eligible for a series of career development courses: one focused on young professionals, a management development programme and a leadership programme for senior staff .
