Judges’ supreme award

WINNER MORGAN SINDALL FOR PADDINGTON STATION SPAN 4 RENEWALS JUDGES’ COMMENT

“This scheme has overcome huge challenges – structural, heritage, proximity to a live railway and nearly 30m passengers per annum”

Among all the entries in this year’s awards, one submission demonstrated a degree of excellence that elevated it above all others as the outstanding winner in the Construction News Awards 2012. Morgan Sindall was faced with a

substantial number of challenges in taking on the contract for the restoration of span 4 at London’s Paddington Station. Working within one of

London’s busiest terminals – not to mention a Grade I-listed building – the contractor had to keep disruption to the rest of the station to a minimum while working eff ectively surrounded by as many as 180,000 passing passengers every day. In addition to this, the

company had to liaise with a 60 | 12 July 2012

diverse range of stakeholders, ranging from local authorities to train operators to heritage organisations. Yet Morgan Sindall showed

itself more than capable of not only meeting but surpassing these obstacles to deliver a renovated span that Brunel would have been proud of. The judges were impressed

with the contractor’s handling of the scheme’s complex logistical requirements, such as the safe use of tower cranes in the live station environment and the provision of multiple plans for each work area, which enabled the optimum solution to be used and kept the project on track. The close co-ordination with

Network Rail demonstrated particular excellence, with the

contractor’s regular meetings and extensive communication ensuring fewer snags along the way. Moreover, this approach illustrated the value of closer co-operation between all parties and was refl ected in the warm praise the rail authority aff orded Morgan Sindall upon the scheme’s completion. The contractor also showed a

commitment to good supply chain practice, with all major subcontractor fi nal accounts agreed within three months of the completion date. There were also no disputes, strikes or claims on the scheme. The result of Morgan Sindall’s

eff orts is not only an impressive improvement to Paddington Station but an iconic testament to industry-leading construction.
