“FAIR Facts” For Indian River County By Toby D. Turner, General Manager

The Firefighters’ Indian River County Fair held March 9-18, 2012 was themed “Your Fair, Your Family, Your Fun.” Total attendance at the event was 42,121 people, down from 2011. Heavy rain and lightning closed the Fair on opening day at

9:30pm. All day rain fell on Sunday and we were unable to open to the public however, the swine show in the covered livestock barn was available for visitors who attended the show that day. The School District of Indian River County had spring break the same week so children could attend later on weekdays. The Fair’s official website www.firefightersfair.org had over 799,000 hits on the site in March alone, and the site was overloaded with web visitors on closing weekend and collapsed from too much Band- width usage. Admission prices have held steady for the last 17 years howev-

er; this year we chose to increase the adult admission by $1 to offset costs associated with the Fair’s operation such as diesel fuel, entertainment, advertising and insurance costs. Strates Shows provided the midway, where the carnival gross

was down 7% compared with 2011. This was the second season the carnival and the Fair used “Barcoded” ticket cards and wrist- bands. This system allows proper tracking of ticket sales and rider usage on the grounds. An increase this season in the number of entries for competitive

exhibits were; baked goods, creative crafts and canning. A baked goods auction was held Saturday evening March 10th with pro- ceeds going the Indian River County Youth 4-H program. An ex- citing new competitive entry this season was a Corn Hole tourna- ment where 22 teams competed for cash prizes as well as a Truck Tug-of-War where local pick-up truck owners pulled their

way to winning cash prizes. There was a Hay Bale decorating contest where 4-H clubs decorated large round hay bales which were placed around the carnival

this way we could bring

“Agriculture to the midway.” Three grounds attractions entertained fairgoers; the “Marcus

Magic” Comedy & Illusion Show; the “Firefighter Training Show” ; and the Maximum Velocity stunt..

The Interactive

Blacksmith Demonstrations were located at the livestock pavil- ion. The “Simon Sez” Comedy Hypnosis Show had the crowd laughing each evening.\ 4-H entries for Swine, Steers and Breedstock were down from

2011. Cavies, Chickens, Goats, Rabbits and Citrus trees were up from 2011. Total livestock sale prices were up from 2011. Next season’s 10 day event is scheduled for March 8th - 17th, 2013 and is themed “Traditions You Treasure.”
