Exhibitors and their Quar- ter horses will have some new rule changes in effect immedi- ately and some new opportuni- ties to receive recognition for their accomplishments at the AQHA world shows in 2012.

AQHA will recognize Inter- mediate-level competitors at four of its 2012 world champi- onship shows.

At the 2012 Built Ford Tough AQHYA, Adequan Select, Bank of America Ama- teur and FedEx Open world championship shows, AQHA will recognize the top-three Intermediate exhibitors in each youth, amateur, Select amateur and open class. New this year, each individual halter class will have Intermediate awards. All Intermediate achievements will also appear on the official records of the horse and exhibitor.

An Intermediate exhibitor at the AQHA world shows is defined as follows: An exhibitor who has never been in the top 10 at a world show in the partic- ular class in which they are competing. For example, AQHA will not separate junior reining from senior reining, or junior western pleasure from senior western pleasure, for pur- poses of determining if an exhibitor is an Intermediate.

However, AQHA will recognize the Intermediate exhibitors in each of the junior and senior open classes.

Intermediate will run as classes within classes, not sepa- rate. AQHA will not bring back the top Intermediate riders for a ride-off or in a separate class. Intermediate exhibitor sta- tus is based only on an exhibitor’s lifetime, combined world show record, and not on the number of points he/she has accumulated.

An exhibitor does not have to make it to the finals of his/her class to be considered for an Intermediate award.

There is no entry fee or nomination procedure for an exhibitor to be considered for an Intermediate award.

The awards will be called the AQHA Intermediate cham- pion, AQHA Intermediate reserve champion and the AQHA Intermediate third place. Intermediate accomplish- ments also will appear on the exhibitor’s and horse’s AQHA official record.

The Intermediate exhibitor recognition package will include an 8-inch clear globe for first place and 6-inch clear globes for second and third place. Each Intermediate champion will also receive a specially designed patch that can be placed on a qualifiers jacket that can be pur-

The AQHA regional cham- pionship shows have been over- whelmingly attended this year, says AQHA Executive Director of Shows Patti Carter-Pratt. (Journal photo)

There are two projects that have consumed my life this last year, those being the new AQHA leveling program and the inaugural AQHA Novice championship shows. Both of these projects have been a great undertaking for AQHA staff, AQHA Professional Horsemen and show managers. Let me tell you – I couldn’t do it without those three groups of people. I’ve got to say, I am so excited about the direction of the first Novice championships! We’ve heard great feedback from our show managers that this year’s AQHA regional championship shows have been overwhelmingly attended. Com- bined with great show manage- ment, we also chalk this great attendance up to the Novice championships.

As one of the qualifying

methods for both the 2012 and the 2013 Novice champi- onships, placing in the top 10 in a Novice class at your regional championship provides benefits two-fold. First, you ensure your- self a spot in any Novice cham- pionship class(es) (that you are eligible for), and you also earn great prizes at the regional championship. And don’t forget, achievements at an AQHA regional championship and Novice championship show will appear on your and your horse’s performance records.

chased by the exhibitor. The top three Intermediate exhibitors will also have the option to pur- chase a championship buckle. The top three 70-&-over competitors at the Adequan Select World, August 24 - September 1 in Amarillo, will receive an AQHA Super-Select award, designed by AQHA’s new trophy company, Awards Recognition Concepts. This achievement will also appear on the official records of the horses and exhibitors.

AQHA Rule Changes Changes recommended by the Amateur Committee and approved by the Executive Committee, which affect ama- teur membership, Rule Nos. 101 (g)(4), 403 and 405 are effective immediately. The updated rules can be found in the Handbook’s online version. The following changes have been made to Rule No. 403:

An individual must wait three years to be eligible to compete as an amateur after par- ticipating in an activity that made them ineligible to com- pete.

For three calendar years previous to application for ama- teur membership, an amateur may not have held membership accreditation with the Profes- sional Rodeo Cowboys Associa- tion, Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (barrel rac-

announced the 2013 Novice championship qualifying meth- ods on May 1. If you haven’t seen the new qualifying meth- ods, you can check them out here. A few details for qualify- ing have changed for 2013, so be sure to read the new qualify- ing methods.

ing only) or International Pro- fessional Rodeo Association for those events or classes which are the same events or classes in which the individual competes, or desires to compete, in AQHA amateur competition. For exam- ple, an individual who competes in a PRCA roping event may not compete in amateur calf rop- ing or dally team roping (head- ing or heeling), but may show in other amateur classes. A permit holder is not considered as one who has membership accredita- tion in a professional organiza- tion; because of this, the indi- vidual may compete in any AQHA amateur class.

An individual who is 65 years or older and is a member of the American Quarter Horse Association of Professional Horsemen is eligible to immedi- ately apply for amateur mem- bership so long as they meet all other amateur eligibility require- ments and relinquish their Asso- ciation of Professional Horse- men membership.

Additionally, changes were made to Rule No. 405 A(c). The changes clarify rules as they relate to Novice exhibitors in the Novice youth and Novice amateur divisions. The follow- ing changes have been made to Rule No. 405 A(c): Once an individual has earned 25 AQHA Novice amateur, amateur, Novice youth, youth or open

the red carpet for the bounty of prizes we’re offering this first year:

A specially designed Montana Silversmith buckle; Novice championship trophy, designed by AQHA’s new tro- phy company, Awards Recogni- tion Concepts; and neck wreath to the champion of each class A pair of Justin boots and Novice championship trophy to second place

Before you go hauling to your regional championship show, don’t forget to check which classes you and your horse are eligible in. Keep this in mind: If you, the exhibitor, placed in the top 10 in a halter class at the 2011 FedEx Open, Bank of America Amateur, Adequan Select and/or Built Ford Tough AQHYA world championship show(s), you are ineligible to compete in any hal- ter class in any division with a horse of the same sex as the horse that placed in the top 10 the world show. Also, a halter exhibitor who placed in the top 10 at a world championship show in the previous year is not eligible to compete in halter at a regional championship. Further- more, if you placed in the top 10 in a performance class at any

One of the neat things that AQHA competitors can do right now (from May 1 to June 30) is qualify for both the 2012 and the 2013 Novice champi- onships. The 2012 qualifying period ends June 30, and since the 2013 qualifying period start- ed on May 1, that gives AQHA members the opportunity to hit the shows and have their show numbers (which count toward the 20 shows qualifying method) apply to both the 2012 and 2013 events. Exhibitors at the Region Eight and Ten cham- pionships (whose regional championships are held before June 30, 2012) have the chance to vie for qualification to both the 2012 and 2013 events. Want to know when your regional championship is? You can check the dates, and find a map of regions, here.

One lucky exhibitor in each class will be randomly selected for a great prize donat- ed by AQHA corporate partners. And don’t forget: Tex Tan saddles will be awarded to the high-point 13 & under, 14-18, amateur and Select amateur competitors.

For those of you who have qualified for the Novice cham- pionships (or if you’re hitting the road to finish up your quali- fying), look for your invitation to the event to arrive in the beginning of July. The deadline to enter the event is August 30. If you’re heading to Murfrees- boro, Tennessee, to attend the Nutrena AQHA East Novice Championship Show, get your entries in early, because there are a limited number of stalls. Any individual who has been an accredited horse show judge will not be eligible to participate in Novice skill sets.

There’s one final opportu- nity that the Novice champi- onships present and that’s the chance to take part in making American Quarter Horse histo- ry. The Novice championships offer a great opportunity for Novice-level competitors to shine at a championship show, and you, too, will have an opportunity to make sure that the Novice championship shows are a hit.

By sponsoring a class at the inaugural Novice champi- onships, you’ll have the chance to support the growth of our industry and put your name in front of a new generation of exhibitors.

The class sponsorship package includes:

A logo or name inclusion on the signage in the coliseum A full-page color adver- tisement in the show program A logo or name inclusion on the draw sheets, the opportu- nity to present awards for the class sponsored
